Ascend to a higher plane

Advantages: High concept game with a good emphasis on story
Disadvantages: Can be abused by power gamers

Mage is part of White Wolf’s “World of Darkness” and so is compatible with the likes of Vampire and Werewolf. As you would expect from a Storyteller game the emphasis is very much on the story. Adult themes abound and techniques such as symbolism, foreshadowing, parallel storytelling all help to build up compelling and complex stories, it’s a far cry from your standard dungeon hack, role-playing has grown up.

All in all Mage is a great addition to the world of darkness, and much more fun to play than vampire, that doesn’t mean it’s a better game, it’s just more fun.

Now as I’ve mentioned in previous reviews about Vampire, I think the world of darkness games work best when they are slowly revealed to the players so from now on I’ll be discussing things you might not want to know if you intend to play

In mage you get to be a magic user, but it is set in the here and now, so you have to be careful about hiding what you can do as there are forces out there that don't like that sort of thing becoming public knowledge. You can bend reality to your will (eventually) you can walk between the worlds ...
...huge amount of scope in Mage for creating your own character - lots of choices about background, abilities, allies, foes, weaknesses and the like. You have a lot of flexibility in terms of how you develop the character as well. Using the book - its a nice read and the illustrations are excellent.
