MapSend WorldWide Basemap software enables you to create a basemap for any region of the world. The basemap can then be saved to a Secure Digital (SD) card, or if your Magellan GPS receiver does not use SD cards, but has mapping capabilities, save directly into its memory. You can define and save as many WorldWide Basemap regions as you wish. The basemap region size you can upload to your GPS depends on how much memory you have available. A basemap contains major map features like highways, railroads cities, etc. Magellan mapping GPS receivers have a built-in basemap for either North America or Europe, depending on where you purchased it. The built-in basemap, a MapSend WorldWide Basemap region you upload, and a MapSend detailed map you upload can all be stored on your Magellan mapping GPS together. Adding a WorldWide map to the GPS does not erase the built-in map. You can toggle between the built-in basemap and a WorldWide basemap through the menu on your GPS. Your Magellan GPS automatically switches to a detailed map when the majority of the displayed area is covered by a detailed map, and the zoom scale is 0.4 miles or less.
Advantages: Brilliant Features. Extremely easy to use. Built in SD card reader. Disadvantages: Slightly pricey compared to other GPS systems.
...I recently bought this navigation system for my car. I am not familiar at all with the roads in my city and this little device has already helped me SO much. It's extremely easy to use. It's got a few options for adding destinations - you can either put in the address (even takes partials), or you can search through different categories allowing it to pinpoint the closest in the region and how far away from you they are.
The navigation system itself can be set to 2D or 3D. Both are pretty much the same, but the 3D takes a bit of time to get used to. When in downtown areas, some buildings even appear as 3D structures!
The voice navigation is also quite useful. You can set it to a male or female voice, set the volume level, and when he/she speaks.
Destinations can be saved into the GPS system's built in memory allowing you to just...

Advantages: Very accurate position finder. High functionality. Disadvantages: Needs batteries. Can operate continuously for only 24 hours
...of guesswork and estimation in this and in poor conditions, updating the chart can be difficult and especially so if the crew is inexperienced at boat handling.
MagellanGPS 2000 - a solution?
Yes – one of them. Never a substitute for accurate chartwork, DR navigation and log-keeping. There are other ways of finding out position like Decca (Europe) and Loran (in the US), but both these methods, based on radio beacons have built-in errors and still require some adjustment. Satellite navigators like GPS 2000 used to have built-in errors for US defence considerations, but in August 2000 these were removed and the accuracy of readings improved from around 10-100metres down to what is now about 1-3 metres from my observations.
Position co-ordinate systems
There are quite a few alternatives provided as standard – Ordnance...

Advantages: Size, speed, colours, waterproof, SD slot Disadvantages: Reliance on poor Magellan Maps, no third party support
...I wanted a small GPS unit principally for my off road mountain biking activities.
It's a real hassle stopping the bike unfolding the OS map and working out precisely where you are, on a legitimate bridle path or in a farmers backyard.
When I saw the advert for the new eXplorist 500 at £350, featuring Magellan's topographical UK map, I thought this is it, a bit expensive, but just what I've been waiting for.
The reality is somewhat different to the expectation, hence my disappointment.
Now don't get me wrong, this little GPS unit is easy to use, it's fast and accurate and will display your position on it's simple and crude basemap as good as any other Garmin or Magellan unit. It will also give you an accurate reading of latitude and longitude or OS grid reference.
But what's the use of a 16 colour TFT screen if the map on it...
