satellite navigation devices come in all shapes and sizes, with the most popular variety being in car systems that can be mounted on the dashboard or windscreen and used as a route finding aid while on the roads. with its shock resistant, waterproof body and AA battery powered operation, magnellans latest GPS unit is a handheld device primarily aimed more at hikers, ramblers and outdoors types, rather than those who prefer the relative comforts of an automobile. theres no bracket for attatching it to a bike, which seems a shame. if youre used to the in car variety then the explorist might seem a little disappointing it doesnt have a colour screen, for a start. its monochrome LCD can be illuminated by a reddish backlight, nut obviously it can be a little hard to work with black and white maps. unlike most other GPS systems, there are no voice commands either, though spoken directions are less relevant for users who are travelling by foot. the software the explorist runs was fairl fast and easy to use, with a simple menu and control system based around a five way joystick and a group of rubber buttons. the buttons themselves dont share the screens backlight, which makes the device tricky to use in dark conditions.route planning is based on points of interest rather than postcodes and addresses which can be a bit limiting. the explorist comes with some european base maps pre installed but theyre not particulary detailed. more detailed maps can be purchased and installed via a PC and USB link although only 22mb of internal memory is available and theres no memory card slot for further expansion. if you're a fan of geocaching a relatively new pastime thats a kind of GPS take on the treasure hunt you'll be pleased to hear that the explorist 210 comes with software that allows you to download geocache points of interest from the internet, upload them to the handheld unit and get hunting. apart from this, there are few extra features. although the explorist 210 is a relatively low cost GPS system at around £150, its also relatively limited in terms of application, unless you need to pin point your location in the middle of a hike.
