Captain Scurvy's Most Dastardley Pop Up Pirate Ship

Advantages: Sturdy, vibrant, no mess and very enjoyable.
Disadvantages: Take up alot of floor or table space.

! To be opened only by Scurvy?s loyal pirates?. Cannot divulge the inside as you may not be one of Captain Scurvy?s loyal pirates. Once you have read this part of the book, tie the ribbons back together to make the most dastardly of high seas, with octopus, dolphins and Captain Scurvy?s Pirate Ship in full sail. Then play the game of hunting for the treasure. These two books are magical and full of details, sturdy and well worth looking out for. ...

Review of Captain Scurvy's Most Dastardly Pop-Up Pirate Ship - Steve Cox

Talking Ships

Advantages: Enjoyable, hard to put down, likeable characters
Disadvantages: None

, much like a living being and each ship holds a special connection to his or her family. The main characters include Althea Vestrit, a rebellious younger daughter who was denied the inheritance to her family live ship and is on a quest to get it back; Wintrow Vestrit, a priest in training who has been forced to serve upon the Vivacia by his father and Kyle Haven, the captain of the Vivacia. The characters are all very well developed and likable and the plot is detailed and fast moving. Once this book is picked up it is very difficult to put down and shares the addictive qualities that so many of the true classics have. I highly recommend Ship of Magic to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy novel. ...

Review of Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders) - Robin Hobb

Living Ships

Advantages: Great characterisation, excellent and realistic fantasy world in which all the elements fit, complex story structure which allows us to see how a number of individual stories create a larger whole, complex and realistic treatment of good and evil
Disadvantages: Lacking in action scenes, action writing unemotional and rather flat, third book in this series not out yet.

Sentient ships with which family members bond. Truly living vessels, with figure-heads that move and speak. Ships that can feel the wind, guide themselves through storms. Magical ships that can negotiate a passage to the Rain Wilds and come back loaded down with magical items. These are the dreams of the Bingtown Traders. Indeed, so important are these Liveships to them that they will morgage the family weath for generations and even risk the enslavement of their own children in order to purchase such a ship. Robin Hobb's new trilogy, The Liveship Traders, starts with the premise that such ships can exist and then goes on to show how they can fit into a world of magic and torment, a world in which the wonders of wizard wood are not exactly what they seem and the wealth of the Liveship Traders subject to the whims of a despotic leader ...
