... The first thing I would say is that no job of this nature will be without issues during installation and the key is to stay calm, don't take it personally, don't annoy the installers and be polite yet firm with Magnet. THE DECISION To make sure I was getting a decent price on this, I got ... Read review

Positive polarity from Magnet if you stick with my tips

Advantages: Reasonable kitchen, helpful installers willing to fix all snag issues
Disadvantages: Expensive, poor communication at times, work overran slightly, chasing up required

...me that the more expensive Magnet would provide the best service, and so I plumped for them.

'''THE SOFTISH SELL'''

As the local showroom is near work, I went in one day and arranged an appointment with a "designer" (or, more accurately, "salesman"). I was given a sheet of squared paper and asked to take dimension measurements from my kitchen so that they would be able to show me what was possible.
...in the post. I phoned Magnet and they told me not to sign it until the subcontractor's surveyor had been round to check that the dimensions I had given were correct and that there weren't any other unforeseen issues they would have to deal with. I then had a letter saying what needed to be paid and that it had to be paid by such and such a date.

Magnet subcontract the building work out to companies who seem to work almost exclusively ... more

Our Dreadful Experience of Magnet Kitchens

Disadvantages: Dreadful service and poor quality units

...kitchen. Unfortunately we chose Magnet and that dream turned into a nightmare. The problems began the day we first arranged to see a kitchen designer. Our appointment was for 10am but Magnet rang to say we were double booked and asked us if we could come at 11am instead. We said OK, but when we got there no one was expecting us at all. How we wish we'd walked out there and then. We were made to feel very unwelcome and this was borne out when we ...
...us (amazingly at our local Magnet store). It was delivered to us and left in the garden in the mud and rain along with the worktop. It took a further 11 weeks to sort the correct units out and to get replacement worktops for the water damaged ones. We were lucky that we'd been able to keep part of the old kitchen working otherwise we'd have had shares in the local Chinese takeaway. Apart from the total lack of product knowledge the staff at Magnet ...

Magnet Showrooms and lack of service

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Rude, impersonal service

...of stores to visit. Geographically, Magnet (Villiers Road, Kingston upon Thames) came first and were advertising 50% off and a further 10% discount for the first week. Great! So we went in, had a look around and decided to chat to a designer about a layout and a quote. This is where the problem began. This man was rude and downright snobby. He asked for our budget. I told him £1500 to £2000. Without even asking the size of the kitchen, he told us ...
...from Magnet ever. The impression is of a snotty company who feel they don't need customers with a measly £2000 to spend. This man was not one of their own staff but a freelancer who works for them occasionally. I suggest Magnet check up on their freelancers a bit more... ...

Overpriced, pushy sales and cowboy installation

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Poor value, pushy salesman, secretive about pricing of applicances, poor aftersales care, poor quality, faulty goods, excessive delivery delay, badly fitted

...we decided to buy a Magnet kitchen (from Villiers Road Kingston branch) basically because we were enticed by a special offer and because the showroom was closest to us. The showroom was very well laid out and the units looked good, enabling us to fully envisage the kitchen we wanted. The salesman was ultra attentive, but to the point of being "over-the-top" and making me feel uncomfortable. However we went ahead as my mother liked the kitchen units ...
...No one should buy from Magnet unless there truly are no other kitchen stores around. At the time we felt there were no other kitchen stores to buy from, as independent stores are substantially more expensive. Following this, a friend mentioned IKEA had good value kitchens which you could design yourself or have some help from their consultants. We had not considered IKEA before, as we did not feel confident enough to fit it ourselves, but after our ...

Magnet kitchens - never again

Advantages: high street provider, nice showrooms
Disadvantages: very poor fitting service

...and went along to a Magnet showroom. We were prepared to pay a bit more for a quality product, believing the brochure about their 'Craftsmen' fitters and good quality cabinets. How wrong we were. This was late 1999, so if Magnet has changed since then some of this might not apply. However, I would want to alert ciao members to our bad experience. I do know that point viii) below definitely still applies, I phoned to check. I found the Salespersons ...
...wish I had demanded that Magnet take that rude man out of my house, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. He was more polite when my husband was home, which says a lot. The fitter is given an allocated fee for fitting the actual kitchen, which doesn't seem to take into account any awkwardness of the kitchen in question (eg awkward corners). Herein lies a major problem with Magnet. The fitters are contracted to Magnet, not employees of Magnet. The ...

Another Magnet nightmare

Advantages: The kitchen units themselves
Disadvantages: They don't seem capable of fitting kitchens and break promises on when fitting will be completed

...the mistake of thinking that Magnet would be good at fitting kitchens. To close the deal on the sale, the promised that the fit would take 4-5 days and that they would work over weekends. 5 weeks later, the kitchen is still not finished. It was completely out of action for a whole week and barely servicable for another two. The attitude of the staff in the showroom was totally unhelpful. ...not measured up accurately, cabinets being shoddily fitted, applicances not being ordered). The biggest problem is that they make you pay upfront so that you really feel that you have no way out of the situation. In the end, the only person who seemed to be able to get things moving at all was a lady called Janine in their customer care centre (01535 661133). With any luck, her intervention will mean that the kitchen can be finished by Christmas ...

Magnet Kitchens In Docklands (London)

Advantages: Lovely Kitchens
Disadvantages: Slow Service

Recently had a contract up in London for new apartments. Most the apartments the tenants had a choice of either Symphony kitchens or Moore’s Kitchens, but for the top apartment, you know the Bling Bling one, well the client insisted that they wanted a Magnet Kitchen because they had seen an advert and liked a particular range. Well we agreed this was ok as they were spending allot of money as an extra for this. The range that the client went for was the Oslo Combination range. The main styling features of Oslo is the contrast of plain woodgrain effect cupboard doors with bright steel handles. It really has a clean and simplistic design that really lends itself to variety of finishes. The options for the woodgrain effect range from rich ocean green, cool turquoise and warm vanilla. We also had the option of mixing maple ...

Superb service with Kitchens Direct

Advantages: Quick turnaround of appointments, knowlegeable salesman, great service, value for money
Disadvantages: would prefer 3d views/plans during first consultation

I read the reviews on this site with interest as I was planning on changing my kitchen. I had some good recommendations from friends about Kitchens Direct so was shocked to read that other users had such negative things to say about them. We decided to Magnet, Moben, Homebase and Kitchens Direct in to see how they compare on price, quality, product knowledge and how great the service was. The salesman that came from Kitchens Direct impressed us the most, he had good product knowledge and he was able to redesign my kitchen to how I wanted it to look. Some of the other companies were just after a quick sale and they were putting pressure on us to sign on the night. We thought that as we were spending over £10k on a kitchen we would like to have some time to think things through. The Kitchens Direct guy gave us time to ...

Excellent Value, Great Service

Advantages: Good quality, good price, fast delivery, very helpful
Disadvantages: You have to find your own fitter but that could be a good thing...

Having shopped around for ages I knew the style that I was after, a high gloss white kitchen with a plain door found out that is called a slab door. I tried all the usual suspects MFI, Magnet, Homebase Wickes, Ikea and then went about reading reviews (thanks everyone!) I was getting quotes for silly amounts of money considering I live in a flat and just need a standard galley kitchen, People like MFI, Magnet and KBBC were quoting me figures in the region of 8 - 13k fitted, this is just silly considering the kitchen is what 10 units and I did not want anything else changed. Of course the usual patronising deals started to come on, sign up now and we will let you have it for X or we will throw in Y. Just quote me your best price first, I hate these games! So I looked around and came across flatpack-kitchens.co.uk I called them ...
