Well with the summer months coming up this is one thing I know I shall definitely be needing. Despite all the warnings this is one fact I've learnt the hard, sore, painful way. But it's taken me a while to learn - I've been burnt badly several times before I finally realised that I NEED to put sun cream on.
But that's not what prompted me to buy this sun cream. Ordinarily I probably wouldn't have looked twice at this on the shelf, I'd have just stuck to the brands that I normally use. However, after burning my scalp - which believe me is extremely painful - I decided that I needed to start looking further afield for my sun protection. And that's when I came across Malibu Dry Oil Spray. Now I don't like the thought of putting anything called '
dry oil' onto my skin, especially to protect myself against sun burn. I didn't really have much choice though, as I needed something that was suitable for my scalp, which this is.
I don't always like to wear a hat when I'm out in the sunshine, and this was the only product I could find that was suitable for spraying onto my hair. So I bought it.
As far as I'm aware this product only comes in factors 4, 8 and 15, I bought SPF 15 because of my tendency to burn, I wanted the highest available. It has a three starUVA rating which is apparently superior.
For those of you who don't know what the SPF means... Basically, if we say that you can stay in the sun for 10 minutes without burning, when using sunscreen you can stay in for that initial ten minutes multiplied by the SPF you are wearing. So with the factor 15 dry oil spray you can stay in for (10 x 15) - 150 minutes or two and a half hours without burning.
**Smell** It does have a coconut-y smell about it, which considering I don't like coconuts would normally put me off, but it is quite pleasant.
**Application** It's really easy to apply - it comes in a spray bottle so you just spray and rub in, it absorbs quite well though it's best to be careful of getting it on your clothes. I tend to spray it into my hand and then rub it where I want it and this eliminates this problem. It absorbs fairly quickly which is good but leaves your skin with a glisten to it. The thing with it being oil is not too use too much, otherwise it doesn't feel very nice. But despite this I've found it does leave your skin feeling smooth and soft. As for putting it on your scalp, well I just lightly sprayed it over my hair, I was a bit worried about it leaving my hair looking greasy but I was very impressed. And I've never burnt my scalp since thank heavens!
**Availability** Well this is the criticism I have of this product - I can't seem to find it anywhere! Malibu is a fairly well known brand of suncream I know that, I've seen other products of theirs around before. I had a quick look on the Boots website (www.boots.com) and this product wasn't available on there, and I wasn't able to find any information from the Superdrug website (www.superdrug.com). When I bought this I got it from Tesco. My internet search for this product isn't proving very fruitful, but I shall definitely keep an eye out for this in Boots and Superdrugs stores.
**Price** I paid about £5 for this product and since I've had trouble locating this product in shops like Boots and Superdrug I've had difficultly putting a price on it. However I did manage to track it down on a website called Auravita (www.auravita.com) where it retails at the following prices:
For a 200ml bottle, SPF 4 - £3.99 SPF 8 - £4.49 SPF 15 - £5.49
I think that this is great value, because of the oily nature of the product you only need to use a small amount so it really does last.
This product claims to be waterproof though which is certainly useful but I can't confirm or deny this at the moment.
I'd definitely recommend this product - even for those who burn quite easily and should really wear a much higher SPF, just because I know from unfortunate personal experience how important it is to protect the scalp.

Have a great summer and enjoy the sunshine but please don't forget your sunscreen!
