We got told by so many people "don't buy a moses basket....complete waste of money....will only last a few weeks....couple of months at the most"! In our case, those statements were complete nonsense. Our daughter was 7lb 3oz when she was born and 49cm in length (the average-sized baby). The first night we had her home, she looked like a little dot in her big cot - in fact she didn't look very comfortable at all. The following morning, my husband drove up to Kiddicare in Peterborough to purchase a moses basket for her, together with the Mamas & Papas Rocking Moses Basket/Carrycot Stand. The stand cost £26.99 and the basket (Zeddy & Rhubarb) cost £68.00. Normal Mamas & Papas retail price for the basket is around £86.00. As far as I know, Kiddicare are no longer stocking Mamas & Papas products, but I believe Glasgow Pram Centre (www.glasgowpramcentre.co.uk) can supply at a reasonable price (n.b. not all products are shown on Glasgow's website, but a quick phonecall to them will ensure a very friendly, helpful service).
The moses basket is very strong and sturdy and capable of taking a baby up to 9kg in weight (which is a hefty size for a moses basket) or until the baby can sit up unaided. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the Zeddy & Rhubarb range, Zeddy is a Zebra and Rhubarb is a Rabbit and the colour scheme is predominantly yellow with small amounts of pale brown. The moses basket is lined in a yellow "waffle" material - slightly padded around the sides, and edged in yellow and pale brown checks. The hood of the moses basket is predominantly the yellow and brown check, with a waffle edge - however, we were slightly disappointed with the hood in that it didn't want to stay up on its own! Not to worry, though, as our daughter wasn't too keen on having it up anyway.
The basket is a very generous size - the sleeping area actually being 13 inches (33cm) wide and 25 inches (64cm) long - obviously the actual basket is bigger than this because of the generous padding and detail. The basket comes with a standard mattress and we were able to purchase fitted sheets to put on the mattress - they are sheets meant for a pram, but we found they fitted the mattress nicely. The basket also comes with a lightweight quilt with an embroidered print of Zeddy & Rhubarb on the front, although, we didn't really use this as our daughter kicks off the covers and she sleeps in a sleeping bag (which, if you want to see a review, I have done a review on Mothercare 2.5tog sleeping bag).
Our daughter has only just outgrown this basket - she is now 5 months old, weighing 14lb 9oz !!! This basket has had plenty of use - day and night.
