As a student of Manchester Mets BA Acting course i wanted to share my opinion. Firstly the audition process is by far the best i have encountered. You spend the whole day warming up,meeting people, getting to know other candidates, which puts you in a prepared state to audition. The course itself is constantly challenging, you constantly take in information and must be very determined to attend here.It can be mentally and physically exhausting as you learn so much about yourself as an actor and your habits in acting. You must be prepared to take critisism and learn from it. I have just started my second year and was amazed at just how much I learnt from my first year. The first year is all about the actors body and everything we do is geared towards getting you out of habitual patterns in your acting and teaching your body to release in order to release your true voice. It sounds quite strange but its amazing when you start to notice your voice opening up, as after all, an actors body is their only instrument so i guess its very important. In the first year we work on poetry,Chekhov and finally Shakespeare. We have voice classes and movement classes in the morning to help us to start to develop our voices and release our bodies. The point of the body work in the first year is to get us into a neutral posture so that we can then take on a characters posture and not bring our own habits to a role. In the second year (of which i am two months into) We work on Brecht in the first term followed by Restoration and then Shakespeare again. So far i have found it really quite extraordinary. Brecht is quite a lot to take in in the first term and is very challenging but also a lot of fun. This year is not focused so much on our bodies but or voice is still worked on a lot. But now we are learning about the actors world and leaving outside behind when you step into that world. It sounds quite crazy to the none actors out there but is really interesting! The third year is when we get the chance to perform to the public (and agents) in our theatre. The whole of the third year is performance and showcases in Manchester and London to prepare us to go out into the world as actors.
The tutors are incredably talented people and all teach in different ways, giving you a very rounded view of the world of acting. The course is three years long and during that time you train and understand what is required of you to be an actor. One of the best things about this school is that it is 1 of 3 universities that is accredited, meaning it is a degree course and is judged by the National Council for Drama Training.Upon graduation you recieve a full equity card. I recommend this course to truely dedicated, aspiring actors and actresses.
