Initially I never wanted to go to university. All the way through high school I wanted to be a chef and chose to do NVQs relevant to this field instead of sitting A-Levels. So the time came when I left college with my NVQs and had to get a job. This I did. The two other universities in Manchester, Victoria and UMIST, both require a high standard of secondary education i.e. high graded A-Levels which I did not have. MMU however looked at my work history and achievements and made me an unconditional offer on the Consumer Marketing course.
I am now nearing the end of second year of study at Manchester Metropolitan University, affectionately known as ManMet or MMU. My course is Consumer Marketing and I’m reading for a Degree.
Initially I never wanted to go to university. All the way through high school I wanted to be a chef and chose to do NVQs relevant to this field instead of sitting A-Levels. So the time came when I left college with my NVQs and had to get a job. This I did. I worked hard for about a year and half until I was a walking zombie. My job had driven me down into the ground. I had a fantastic career set in front of me, working in a restaurant belonging to a certain famous TV chef but unless you have the passion to be a chef you can’t do it. At 19 years old I had a mid-life crisis and on the advice of my boyfriend I contacted ManMet Uni.
That was the first step and it just kind of went from there. I chose ManMet for the simple reason that I lived in Manchester anyway and couldn’t really afford to leave and have to set up home somewhere else. The two other universities in Manchester, Victoria and UMIST, both require a high standard of secondary education i.e. high graded A-Levels which I did not have. MMU however looked at my work history and achievements and made me an unconditional offer on the Consumer Marketing course.
ManMet has a number of campuses, not all of them in Manchester. The central campus, All Saints, in the city centre, is most definitely the busiest with most of the faculties having buildings there. Out-of-town campuses include Hollings in Fallowfield and the Didsbury campus; it is easy to get to the main campus however. Its always puzzled me why the Crewe and Alsager campuses are part of the university as they are about 25 miles away from the rest.
I study at the Hollings campus and although I am happy there in a way I think it would be better to have all of the campuses merge. This would improve facilities such as the library. At Hollings there is a very good library but for some books I have to either go to the All Saints library or order them in from Crewe which can get time consuming especially when you’ve left an assignment until the last minute.
Situated at All Saints, ManMet has a large Student Union building with two bars, various shops, a job centre and all the other usual things you’d find in a building of this nature. Not forgetting of course the Student Executive Committee. Mainly ex-students who work full time for the Union fighting for student’s rights.
As for accommodation, there a large number of university owned and privately owned Halls of Residence. Mainly freshers use these, as it is a good stepping-stone to making new friends and discovering the area. After the first year, most people rent houses. Fallowfield (a couple of miles from All Saints) has become a town of students. The houses are relatively cheap and cheerful but if you do this, be careful. Some landlords exploit their tenants by not keeping their side of the contract.
Manchester is a popular place and is getting more popular. What with the shops, bars, clubs, football teams etc, it is becoming the New London and certain areas are quite exclusive. Since starting university I have never looked back. I’ve met so many people different to my usual friends and seen a whole new way of life. If your considering becoming a student, there are worse places you could be and worse universities you could go to.
Advantages: Good Union, Great Area, Nice People Disadvantages: Crime and Violence, Buildings, Location
...am currently studying at the Manchester Metropolitan University at the Hollings campus in Fallowfield studying Events Management. On the course elsewhere. I have enjoyed my first year at the Met, the let downs of the hollings campus is the lack of lifts in a seven floor building, the temperature always seems to be intensly hot or extremely cold, this is probably due to it being based in the toastrack building which is old and registered meaning not ... ...societies and clubs based in Manchester such as "Extreme Frisbee" and "Horse Riding" there is also the infamous "Rock Society" going to sold out gigs and rock venues all over the country, often frequenting Nottingham Rock City.
Being based in Fallowfield is really good as you have access to Manchester's "Student Ghetto" housing places like Glass, Revolution and The Orange grove boasting all food under £2.50 students only! You may well be finding ...

Advantages: Too many to count! Disadvantages: Rainy weather, a few dodgy surrounding areas
...fun. Eventually he settled on Manchester University and, whilst I didn't want to do the English degree there, I found that I did want to do the course offered at Manchester Metropolitan University, which was very nearby. I also thought the people there would be a bit more fun. There's a time for work, but there's also a time for play and I was afraid I'd be surrounded by horrifically intelligent people and seem a bit dense in comparison!
I'll admit ... ...I liked the idea of Manchester because it was close enough to where my parents lived if I ever wanted to go home and far enough away so I could gain some well needed independence and experience. I learned a great deal whilst I was studying (both in terms of education and life!) and met some fabulous people including my fiance, so it was obviously a good choice for me! Nearly all of my university friends have stayed in the city and have bought houses ...

...that is what they want. Manchester Met is a university that my sister attends and having visited their many time I can thoroughly recommend it. The entry grades are not as quite tough as Umist (University of Manchester) but the teaching standard is high. There are a lot of different courses you can chose from, and there is an excellent union with all the facilities, located near a bus station it is easily accessible. It is not for from the other ... ...you can take advantage of Manchester itself. It has a good range of shops, bars and clubs. ...evening.
I went to Manchester University and although the Union was ok, it was a bit grotty, especially in the Cellar. I started going to the Met Union as I had a friend there, and it is great. There are two main bars, and on 'club' nights it has the advantgae that you can use both. Top Bar becomes a sort of night club where you can but chips and cheap drinks, while the other remains a normal bar and can be used as a 'chill out' zone. The music ...

a lot of fun. This year is not focused so much on our bodies but or voice is still worked on a lot. But now we are learning about the actors world and leaving outside behind when you step into that world. It sounds quite crazy to the none actors out there but is really interesting!
The third year is when we get the chance to perform to the public (and agents) in our theatre. The whole of the third year is performance and showcases in Manchester and London to prepare us to go out into the world as actors.
The tutors are incredably talented people and all teach in different ways, giving you a very rounded view of the world of acting. The course is three years long and during that time you train and understand what is required of you to be an actor.
One of the best things about this school is that it is 1 of 3 universities that is accredited ...
One of the top university in the country and one that I would recommend anyone to go to. The ManchesterUniversity is a great building, there’s quite a lot of block depending on what you are studying but after a few weeks it won’t be as daunting as your first day.
You do need quite high grades so if you do get offered a place then take it. ManchesterUniversity is situated on the top of Oxford Street, one long road and if you walk up that road you will walk past the ManchesterMetropolitan opposite the BBC building.
Studying wise ManchesterUniversity has got very high success rates and since it is ranked very highly you’re more likely to get a job after you have finished studying.
Located ten minutes away from the City Centre you will never get bored, there’s loads of places to eat, have fun ...
Advantages: great career prospects Disadvantages: not entirely about fashion.
I am currently at ManchesterMetropolitanUniversity, Studying Fashion Buying for Retail at the Hollings Campus. There are only a few University's which offer this course, the others are London College of Fashion, Westminster and Lancashire University.
I decided on The manchester course because it sounded like it was more specialised on the buying aspects of Fashion which interested me the most.
Now i have started the course, i am not entirely sure how i feel about it.
I expected it to be very much about fashion, however the course lecturers are mainly economists, and do not have much experience within the fashion industry.... i have therfore found that it is very much business orientated.
The degree is a 3 year BSc course, however you do have the choice of doing it as a 2 year HND, then if you pass the two years you can ...
