Advantages: Really friendly city, awesome nightlife, incredibly cheap, city/uni close together, 80,000 students! Disadvantages: Not clean city, some departmental buildings really grimey, hectic lifestyle
...If you are going to Manchester for your first year, there is only one place you need to stay - Owens Park! Seriously, this place has got a reputation for being one of the liveliest student campuses in the North. The wardens even say, don't come here if you looking to sleep, or looking for a quiet place to study! There are over 1,000 students in this area alone; it is located in Fallowfield so you do not need to go all the way into town for a night ... ...better night. Every student who lived here said it was the best year they ever had of their life. Everyone who didn't stay, always say they wished they had. Trust me, this place is first-class for fun.
As for other accommodation, there are a lot of private halls of residents offered by private companies. These are like luxuries. They charge higher rent, but they are more like high class hotel suites some of them.
I would definitely recommend any one looking for a proper student life to seriously look at this Uni.
You will need high grades to get into this University, and some of the courses at this Uni are number one in the league tables, such as Law and Dentistry. The education is of high-calibre. You are pushed at this University, and they do try to work you hard. But what I have found, particularly in this City, it is hard to get the balance between Uni work and social life if you are not careful.
As soon as you start as a fresher at this University, you are absolutely loving it! The cheapest drinks you can imagine, the Curry mile (literally a mile long road just with Indian/Pakistani restaurants and take-aways), so many different night clubs and bars, good entertainment and lots of youngsters about. It is the student dreamworld! A whole lot of fun.
The local Mancunians are really friendly. Being brought up in London, I didn't realise how unfriendly London was. The people up North are so much nicer. You see people just smiling and you can randomly chat to anyone on the bus without getting a dirty blank look.
The Uni has a very good location. It is fairly close to the City Centre and is situation on Oxford Road (this is the most served bus route in the whole of Europe). You will need a bus pass in this town, but they are ridiculously cheap because of so many competing bus companies. For example a 7-day pass, to use even after you come out hammered from a club at 3am, will only cost you about £3.00. Bargain!!
The University offers its own fairly good accommodation in several halls of residence. If you are going to Manchester for your first year, there is only one place you need to stay - Owens Park! Seriously, this place has got a reputation for being one of the liveliest student campuses in the North. The wardens even say, don't come here if you looking to sleep, or looking for a quiet place to study! There are over 1,000 students in this area alone; it is located in Fallowfield so you do not need to go all the way into town for a night out. A Fallowfield pub crawl would probably be a much better night.
The Student Union is generally good. They have an excellent support system for any advice you need for anything. The bar is good, and the food is cheap once again here. They do a lot of events, and it is joined to the Academy where concerts/gigs happen weekly, with some fairly big names.
I have no criticisms of the University itself. But my only problem is that the city is an industrial city, and it can get to you. It is grimy, and I find spending too much time there can start to bring you down.
Overall this is a blinding University with many good things going for it, and it is no way a geeky place to study! You are guaranteed to have the best student years of your life if you come here!
...anyone to go to. The Manchester University is a great building, there’s quite a lot of block depending on what you are studying but after a few weeks it won’t be as daunting as your first day. You do need quite high grades so if you do get offered a place then take it. Manchester University is situated on the top of Oxford Street, one long road and if you walk up that road you will walk past the Manchester Metropolitan opposite the BBC ... ...high success rates and since it is ranked very highly you’re more likely to get a job after you have finished studying. Located ten minutes away from the City Centre you will never get bored, there’s loads of places to eat, have fun and the night life isn’t that bad either. It can get a little packed though with other students from the other universities coming down. There’s Wilmslow Road not so far from the University if ...

Advantages: everything's great Disadvantages: crime rate is high
Manchester Univesity is fantastic! The courses are great - especially in science and engineering and are well recognised as being good by industry. The city is vibrant and a very fun place to be a student. It's a cheap place to live - both for accomodation and going out. And the univeristy union is also excellent. The number of students there speaks for itself. I think Manchester has the largest student population in Europe. The city is also easy ... ...crime levels are high - burglary of student houses in certain areas (e.g. Moss Side) is a popular past time for the locals. So make sure you're well insured. having said that, they are easily detered, an alarm on the house and decent locks puts the theives off pretty easily. ...

Advantages: Good union, lots of resources Disadvantages: Weather
I can thoroughly recommend Manchester as a great place to be, both for the University and the city itself. One great advantage Manchester has for students is that there are around 40,000 students studying at the three main Universities in the city. This ensures that there is a wide range of services, shops and pubs to cater for students needs.
For the obvious such as student bars and clubs offering cheap entrance and drinks, there are other, more ... ...unions in the area. Manchester Met union is 5 mins walk away and they have some great bars in there!!!
There are a wide range of bookshops to cater for everyones needs and the library is one of the biggest in the country.
The city itself is greatm the centre is compact (well, compared to London anyway) and has everything you could need, including a great second hand record store in Vinyl Exchange, a lot of my loan was spent in there!!!
Come to ...

Advantages: Good reputation, great location Disadvantages: none that I have come across
...year at The University of Manchester (just those dreaded end of year exams to go) and now agree with the saying "University is the best time of your life". This uni is well established with an excellent reputation and is located near the city centre, for lots of shopping, drinking and clubbing. To say I was nervous about going to uni would be an understatement - I was terrified! This soon went, however, as I was made to feel welcome by my department, ... ...excellent study services, the primary one being the University library. It offers brilliant services (more books than I ever thought I could see, study rooms, desks, computers) and lots of support from the staff.
The student union is a great place to go inbetween lectures when you just don't feel like working. It is cheap and has many dirnks and food offers. In fact, as there are 40,000 students alone in this uni and two uni's close by (Manchester ...

Advantages: Manchester, good facilities Disadvantages: Some parts of Manchester
I graduated from Manchester University in 1996 and spent four very happy years there.
Manchester was not my first choice of University but after visiting all the sites I'd applied to I decided it was the best. The university is close to town centre with all the clubs and pubs you could ever want, and now that the town centre is being rebuilt the shops are much better. There are top class sports facilities both for viewing sports and taking part, ... ...best in the country. The library is superb and the Manchester Museum is free and worth a look.
Accommodation is plentiful and varies from the student village to quiet areas and is mostly within walking distance if money is short.
All in all a great place to study. ...

Advantages: Too many to count! Disadvantages: Rainy weather, a few dodgy surrounding areas
When the topic of which university we should attend came up at college, it crept up and took me completely by surprise. I knew I wanted to study a degree somewhere, but it was only when my then boyfriend starting applying left, right and centre for places that I realised I might need to put in a bit of groundwork. Being something of a genius, he applied to Cambridge and Oxford (where he was offered places), but as well as putting his brain to good use, he also wanted a bit of fun. Eventually he settled on ManchesterUniversity and, whilst I didn't want to do the English degree there, I found that I did want to do the course offered at Manchester Metropolitan University, which was very nearby. I also thought the people there would be a bit more fun. There's a time for work, but there's also a time for play and I was afraid I'd be ...
Although I didn't actually go to the Met Uni, I can thoroughly recommend the Students Union as a great place to go in the evening.
I went to ManchesterUniversity and although the Union was ok, it was a bit grotty, especially in the Cellar. I started going to the Met Union as I had a friend there, and it is great. There are two main bars, and on 'club' nights it has the advantgae that you can use both.
Top Bar becomes a sort of night club where you can but chips and cheap drinks, while the other remains a normal bar and can be used as a 'chill out' zone. The music is good and there is always a good crowd.
I can't comment on the University itself, but try the Union! ...
A lot of students will have finished their A-Levels and will have decided which university to go to if that is what they want. Manchester Met is a university that my sister attends and having visited their many time I can thoroughly recommend it. The entry grades are not as quite tough as Umist (University of Manchester) but the teaching standard is high.
There are a lot of different courses you can chose from, and there is an excellent union with all the facilities, located near a bus station it is easily accessible. It is not for from the other university and has a lot of things for students to do. If you decide to go to this University, you can take advantage of Manchester itself.
It has a good range of shops, bars and clubs. With it being located near the Arndale you can search for a part time job and be successful in ...
"alternative", easy access, some good departments, interesting mix of people
near-bankrupt (redundancies & closures expected), bottom of league table, spread all over with no consistent transport, too much services centered on (*)
