Advantages Advantages Great band with a wide back catalogue, deep history

Disadvantages Disadvantages Getting towards the end of their lifespan...

Back in 1996, when I stumbled across 'Everything Must Go', I was completely unaware of the band's history leading up to the recording and release of the album; the politics, the image, the 'sell 16 million records then split' plea in the Generation Terrorists era, the missing member. Here was a band whohad experienced it all, yet Everything Must Go was an album which really didn't give much away in terms of the band's past, for a new fan at least. EMG is easily the band's most accessible album, but one which divided the band's following. My next purchase after EMG was the Holy Bible... when I ... more

Advantages Advantages Great live act, great production, alot of diversity, interesting lyrics

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some patchy songs in the early days

Official band members: Guitar/Vocals: James Dean Bradfield Bass/Lyrics: Nicky Wire/Jones Drums/Percussion: Sean Moore Lyrics: Richey Edwards (missing) Additional live musicians Dave Eringa (Keyboards 1993-1994) Nick Naysmith (Keyboards 1995 - Present) Greg Haver (Percussion 2002-2004) Guy Massey (Guitar 2004 - Present) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you ask anyone to name a welsh rock band, they will normally say 'Manic Street Preachers' or 'Stereophonics'. In the britpop days, Wales didn't have many acts in the charts at all. Nowadays ... more

Advantages Advantages A great live act

Disadvantages Disadvantages Missing next gig :-(

The first time I saw the Manics was at T in the Park 1996. Was I impressed, too right I was. By this time they were a trio due to the disappearance (or passing on but that's a different story yet to be answered) of Richey James Edwards. They played mainly songs from their new album, which at that time was everything must go, but they also played classics like Motorcycle Emptiness and Mowtown Junk. They don't say much to the crowd during gigs but they don't need to, their music does the talking. Nicky enjoys doing the odd jump or two and James spins quite a lot but that's as far as it goes for ... more

Advantages Advantages Incredibly comprehensive, features 10 mini-essays alongside an in-depth chronology. Also, some photos in the middle.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None, unless you count £15 as too high (which I don't)

A friend bought me this book for my birthday a while ago, knowing I am a MSP fan. 'Everything' (published in 1999 by Virgin, £14.99 (www.virgin-books.com/music)) is written by music journalist Simon Price, who is a close friend of the band, and, as such, has had the unique position of being present throughout most of the events of the Manics' career. The book is unique amongst Manics biographies in that along with the usual chronological story, discography (very comprehensive), list of websites and such stuff, there are 10 small essays covering the 'theory' behind various aspects of MSP such ... more

Advantages Advantages Pretty men in dresses, lyrics that mean something

Disadvantages Disadvantages getting old now, their past continues to follow them

So, the Manic Street Preachers. They've been going for 15 years and counting. 15 years. For a band that were going to split in a blaze of fury back in 1991, surely this is unthinkable? Well maybe. First let me slip into my Obsessive Manics Fan Skin and point out that they were only going to split if they sold 16 million copies of their first album, Generation Terrorists. Which they didn't. In retrospect, that was yet another statement designed to attract attention of any kind. Well either unadulterated love or pure hate. With the Manics, there's no middle ground. For those that forget, a quick ... more
