If you are looking for a band with hidden messages in the music forget Manowar. Their messages are in your face from start to finish. ...a bit of how great Manowar are. And of course it has my all time favourite Manowar song on it, Battle Hymn. Not bad for a debut.
The Fact type bit.....
**Brief(ish) History**
A long long time ago in a dim and distant past Joey DeMaio formed a band to do in-your-face Metal, with Ross The Boss on guitar, Eric Adams on vocals and Donny Hamzik on drums. The recorded debut album Battle Hymns with no less than Orson ... ...you wanted to know about Manowar but were afraid to find out. If you like your music loud then this could be the band for you, I have already converted my 12 year old son into a fan and some of his friends too. I would tell you this band were like Judas Priest or some other band but they aren't, they are unique. It's not Thrash Metal, it's not Death Metal, it's not anything apart from Pure Metal.
If you are looking for a band with hidden messages in the music forget Manowar. Their messages are in your face from start to finish. With songs mainly about Viking folklaw, it's all kill, kill, hail and kill. And I love it. When they leave the folklaw behind and play more modern songs... it's mostly about how loud they are. This is metal at its most metally. Once the loudest recorded live band in the guinness book of records,(when I saw them play back in 1990 you could feel the music in your bones). Oh yeah one other general point... the clothes (or lack of them) they wear loin clothes and are muscley... puts some off I am told!!!
There have been a few line up changes but it's always Eric Adams and Joey DeMaio as the back bone.
Eric Adams vocal range is amazing.. he seems to be able to hold a note forever and he can go from screachy to melodic in a heartbeat.. yes there are ballardy bits.
Joey DeMaio is a bass player with a difference, he does solo's.... ever heard flight of the bumble bee on the bass? it's amazing.
All the albums are great but if I had to pick just one it would be Battle Hymns, it has a bit of Viking stuff, a bit of sex n violence and a bit of how great Manowar are. And of course it has my all time favourite Manowar song on it, Battle Hymn. Not bad for a debut.

**Brief(ish) History** A long long time ago in a dim and distant past Joey DeMaio formed a band to do in-your-face Metal, with Ross The Boss on guitar, Eric Adams on vocals and Donny Hamzik on drums. The recorded debut album Battle Hymns with no less than Orson Welles (actor, director and man from the sherry ads) doing narration on the track Dark Avenger. Then it was time for a contract with a new label... which they signed in blood, and a new drummer Scott Columbus that hit drums so hard they needed to make him custom ones. They recorded Into Glory Ride then Hail to England and then it was tour time. They invaded Great Britain, then conquered Europe, recorded Sign of The Hammer and made it into Guinness book of world records. Then it was Fighting The World and Kings of Metal before returning to America. Four years later in 1992 was The Triumph of Steel, then two years for Louder Than Hell. The latest album, Warriors Of The World, came out in 2002.

There you go.. everything you wanted to know about Manowar but were afraid to find out.
Albums are available in a few record shops but they aren't easy to find unless you go to more specialist places, but can all be ordered from their website, but as it's American there is postage of $20 ontop... unless you are American of course. A few are available on Amazon and Ebay, if I do manage to find anywhere that has them all I will update this.... as I am looking for them myself as I'm replacing all my old vinyl slowly.
Have added a few pictures so you can see The Kings of Metal in all their glory (but I still haven't been able to find anywhere that stocks the back catalogue without a ridiculous delivery fee though!)
Advantages: The kings of metal! Disadvantages: not very PC
I've been a Manowar fan for 18 years, and in all that time there has only been a few songs I haven't loved. The self proclaimed Kings of Metal sing about many things but there is an overwhelming theme of swords, sorcery, war and death running through it all. Their battle cry throughout their long career is 'Death To False Metal' by which they mean and I quote "Manowar wanna rock, not pose, wearing jeans and leather not crackerjack clothes"
The first ... ...Getting back to their albums, Manowar really came of age with the album 'Fighting the World' they even had a chart hit with the single 'Blow your Speakers'. Every song on the album is slick, hard and heavy, some of the subject matter could be considered cheesy I suppose, but if you like films like Conan the Barbarian, you'll love every minute of it.
FTW was followed by the monster album 'Kings of Metal', fantastic production coupled with awesome ...

Advantages: Total Freedom Disadvantages: Total freedom to get biten/eaten by various aminals!
With my luck, my getting stranded on an island wont start off with the best of ways. I would have had to dive off a ship JUST before the giantexplosion wiped it all out. THEN I would be battling with sharks, man-o-war jelly fish and other nasty sea-faring animals to finally arrive at the island, only to find the only other surviving passenger had got there before me and had levied an imigration tax, forcing me to worked off my outstanding debt for the rest of my stay!
Now....... the things I would take with me (even though they tell you to leave all personal belongings and valuables when there's a fire!!!) would be as so:
#1:
A kids pop-up tent, you know the ones that you can't actually put DOWN!!! That way, I could just add my own branches and leaves and have my own shelter without wasting any item places on things like rope ...
scenes that make him question the effect of this unknown land on its inhabitants' sanity. A prime example of this was when Willard came across a French man-o-war shelling an empty coastline for no apparent reason. This effect of the land and situation on its inhabitants was a theme carried into the Apocalypse Now film version. It is estimated that 20-60% of all US Vietnam veterans may be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of their experiences in the war (Pacific University, 2002). Characters such as Lieutenant Kilgore, Chef, and obviously Kurtz, show characteristics of PTSD and psychological illness. Willard too begins to loose track of his mental awareness in the latter stages of the film. War, and in particular Vietnam, was an ideal method of retelling this theme in 20th century terms.

Advantages: It all has meaning to me Disadvantages: No one will agree with any of it
a tune it would be Vangelis - Love Theme From Bladerunner........... so I doubt I will ever get a chance to smooch to it :o(
2) Best Cover Version -
This is a tough one! Seems that everything is a cover of something these days! I think it would be The Damned - Eloise, not that I can remember who did the original now :oP
3) Worst Cover Version -
This is a tough one! Seems that everything is a cover of something these days! :oP
The worst I think, to me anyway, would be whichever one of Gareth or Will sang Light My Fire, sorry fans of either I get them confused, must be my age! :oP
4) Best Male Vocal -
Argh! How can I pick just one?
If I want to melt it would be Jon Anderson from Yes. If I just wanted to drift away it would be Jim Morrison of the Doors. If it was for range it would be Eric Adams from Manowar. If it was ...
