My mum recently bought the Great Britain Topo for her partner's birthday. He had been looking for excuses to spend £150 for months, so we finally gave in and got him one.
It was not quite what he expected, as the map of Britain is split into smallish sections. You select these sections on your computer and download them to your GPS. You can only have a limited number of sections on your GPS, depending on the memory of your model.
The Topo includes contour lines, roads and tracks, places of interest like pubs, and other accurate geographical features like lakes and rivers. From what I know, the Topo is fairly accurate. I know that it has come in useful when walking. One of the main features is the ability to plan routes on the computer and download them to your GPS.
The compatable models of GPS are as follows (they're all Garmin) (sourced from http://www.sporttek.co.uk/TOPO_Great_Britain.html) -Legend monochrome -Vista monochrome -Legend c -Vista c -GPS 60c -GPS 60cs -Legend Cx -Vista Cx -GPS 60 Cx -GPS 60 CSx -Quest -76 Series -96/96c -GPS MAP 276c -376c -GPS 18 Auto bundle -cfQue 1620 -GPS 10 -Nuvi
All of the products I have seen are on DVD-roms, therefore would require a DVDdisk drive on your computer. I am not aware of a CD-rom version, but this does not mean it does not exist.
If you are a serious walker, I would highly reccommend investing in a topo map. However, if you hardly ever use your GPS, i don't think it's worth you spending the money.

(+) Cheap compared to standalone, removes the need for seperate sat nav (-) No post code only search but this can be resolved with adding a house number of any house
(+) Large clear menu for touchscreen. Quick setup to navigate to postcodes. Clear driving instruction. (-) Poor POIs, Lack of route preview. Missing villages. No cam preview found.
