Marantz SR 8300 A/V Receiver

An A/V receiver with the WOW factor

Advantages: Looks great, sounds awesome, feels awesome
Disadvantages: Detailed set up can be tricky - just as well it comes idiot proof!

Ok then, so I'm a lucky boy.... On my last birthday my wife decided that she wanted to treat me to a home cinema system so off we went to our local Richer Sounds store (they are VERY cheap and VERY helpful - recommended everyone pays them a visit!) with cash in hand an wangled a deal. I got this Marantz A/V Receiver , A Yamaha surround sound speaker package and a Panasonic DVD recorder for the princly sum of £350 - a bit of a discount from the £900 RRP! Review of Marantz SR 4400 A/V Receiver

Marantz SR4400, sounds great, looks lovely

Advantages: Great sound decoding, solid construction
Disadvantages: bit low on power output

I recently bought a Marantz SR4400 and am very happy. I use it with KEF KHT2000 speakers and it sounds amazing. Saving private Ryan is awesome through this reciever the scene whith the storming of Omaha beach has bullets flying all around you powerfull explosion impacts with thunderous rumbles and tight thuds. At the same time voices can be heard clearly through the centre speaker although I had to increase the volume slightly to this channel. Features include night mode which allows digital signals to be decreased, for example when watching action films at night while others are sleeping, turn on night mode and when their is a quiet scene followed by a loud action scene the reciever will lower the volume to a quieter level so that everyone in the house does'nt run to the bomb shelter. Review of Marantz SR 4400 A/V Receiver

Great Intro to Home cinema! SR5400

Advantages: Highly spec'ed, great value for both cinema and stereo
Disadvantages: Doesn't play stereo like a dedeicated stereo amp.

I bought this a few months ago as my first foray into true home cinema surround sounds. I matched this to a Marantz CD/DVD/SACD player, and a mordaunt short speaker package - WOW! You will not know what hits you - first play was Gladiator, I was blown away by the tremendous but composed bass, sounds coming from behind and around me! The Amp itelf is dead easy to set up using the menus displyed on screen and the set up tones for the speaker, A sound presssure meter is an idea but not needed (so the speakers are not over powering each other). It even puts in a storming performance with your stereo CDs, it far outshine my prevous amp (a dedicated sereo amp - again from marantz) I'll be holding on to my SR5400 for a while yet!
