Marcus Trescothick - Test Career
Marcus Trescothick has been a superb find for English cricket. He has come a long way from his days at county side Somerset. He has been an integral part of the success England have recently enjoyed. He made his debut against the West Indies at Old Trafford in August of 2000. He is playing in his 50th test this week against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Since his debut has been an ever present for England and has contributed many runs in England games. He also captained the side at Lord's in the absence of skipper Michael Vaughan through injury. Trescothick has since returned to his role as vice captain. He is also a key fielder in the slips, but his form has dropped a bit of late as he's failing to cling on to some edges.
TEST CAREER STATS
Batting -------> Matches (Innings): 50 (94) Runs: 3648 Average: 42.92 High Score: 219 (v South Africa, The Oval) 50s: 24 100s: 6 Not Outs: 9 Ducks: 6
Fielding ------> Catches: 53 Most Catches per Match: 5
It seems like only yesterday that Trescothick first represented his country. He has held down his England place ever since his first selection and looks set to keep his place. He has been instrumental in giving the England innings a platform on which to build. As an opening batsmen his largely responsible for seeing off the new ball and setting the innings up. He has enjoyed many large partnerships with Michael Vaughan in the time they opened together. He has also shared good partnerships with his new partner Andrew Strauss in recent test matches against New Zealand.
When Trescothick burst onto the international scene, it was clear to everyone that he was something special and most of all a bit different. His approach to batting is one rarely seen in England or elsewhere in the world for that matter. His stance is very upright, his legs remain very straight. He has very little back lift with the bat compared with many other cricketers. He doesn't really have much footwork which has both helped and hindered his progress as a player. He tends to play many of his strokes away from his body. These two factors allow Trescothick to score heavily with a simple free flowing strike of the ball. He does tend to lose his wicket often because of these two factors. He plays at deliveries outside off stump and gets caught behind. His lack of foot work also sees him given LBW a lot.
There is now a bit more competition for the two opening spots in the England team. With Andrew Strauss bursting onto the scene in spectacular fashion with a century on his test match debut. Michael Vaughan has surrendered his opening slot to move down the order. This is in order to accomodate Strauss and to fill in for the retired Nasser Hussian at number four. Trescothick will be removed if he goes on an extended run of poor form but it would take a disaster for him to lose his place any time soon. Trescothick should enjoy the competition and he will be a much better batsmen for it. This is also good news for England.
I do feel that Trescothick will go on to add to his current tally of six test match centuries. He is very composed and confident at the crease. Tresco has worked on batting and he is very consistent. His only run of really poor form came in the recent tour of the West Indies. Since then he has begun to find his form and looks in great touch. He may perhaps be a little disappointed that he hasn't converted many of his half centuries into tons. He has recorded nine scores between 70 and 98 and a 99. If he could have converted two or three of these his statistics would look a lot more healthy. However, when he does make a hundred he does tend to go on. He has a top score of 219, recorded against South Africa. Many batsmen tend to fall soon after reaching their century.
Marcus has a bright future ahead of him and should hold onto his place in the England side for a long while. There is no reason why the maestro shouldn't go on to play 100 tests for England. His record is very impressive for an opening batsmen. His average is one that he should feel very proud of and should look to build upon in the future. He has also shown that he is a capable captain, should England require his services again in the future.
Just today, Trescothick recorded another test half century for England.
Advantages: great talent, proved himself in the international arena, could go far Disadvantages: none - but wait and see after the Aussies
...That’s exactly what Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick has done in the past year. With the England side in the doldrums for the past decade, much vaunted County ‘stars’ have been selected for England and failed miserably. Some like Graeme Hick and Mark Ramprakash have had chance after chance after chance – and repeatedly failed to re-produce their county form at Test level. Not so Trescothick. Right from the off, he has got ... ...century). This Summer could see Marcus launched into World class if he can succeed against the might of the Aussie pace attack led by awesome Glenn McGrath, plus, of course the spin king Shane Warne, himself.
Time will tell, but with England captain Nasser Hussain back for the Ashes games, Graham Thorpe ready for action and young players like Owais Shah and Michael Vaughan thirsting for action – Trescothick will have plenty of teammates just ...

...I will eat my hat. Marcus Trescothick was originally called into the England one day squad for last season's triangular Natwest Trophy series against the West Indies as cover for the injured Nick Knight, have been previously part of the England A tour party in 1999/2000.

Marcus Edward Trescothick, born in Keynsham, Avon (now North Somerset) first shot to cricketing fame as a 16 year old when he amassed an incredible 4000 runs in a season in all cricket for his school, club and county side. By 1993 he was on the Somerset staff, and whilst he did not have the dream start to his county career, scoring a very paltry 18 runs in his first six innings, he managed to stay in the team. His opening partnership ...

"Banger" - so called because of his taste for sausages, rather than anything unseemly (well, I suppose it depends what he *does* with the sausages...) - is that rarest of beasts, a youthful prodigy who actually turned out to be good enough at the very highest level. He made his first-class debut for Somerset way back in 1993, at the age of just 17, after ... ...the hands of the Australians. Marcus was given the honour of skippering the Under-19s against the Indians in 1994, which distinction he did great credit to by making several big scores. But his county performances, while by no means awful, weren't exactly earth-shattering.
So, of course, everyone forgot about him and went on about other "next big thing" types, such as Malachy Loye (yes, quite...). This was probably a good thing in the end, as carrying ...

...emergence of Somerset opening batsman Marcus Trescothick. He has shown real promise with great attacking shots and getting plenty of runs on the board, continuing the good work from the West Indies series win last summer and a good winter tour last year. At 25 he is one of the few emerging talents to have made a place certain in the England team, and plays with such conviction, you feel he has been there for 10 years not 2. Local lad Trescothick ... ...The test call came for Marcus for the summer of 2000, against a weak, but still the potent force of the West Indies. Earlier Trescothick had played for England A in the tour of 1998-99 in New Zealand and was called into the 2000 one day series to play against Zimbabwe and the West Indies, where he played good cricket and caught the eyes of many, especially the England selectors.
Trescothick’s first full cap came against West Indies, at the ...

Marcus Trescothick is one of the great recent finds in English cricket along with Craig White. He is an accomplished player at test level already after only a handful of tests in what is the most difficult position of all as opening batsman.
What I like are the fact he has a great technique and temperment. He does not look afraid or nervous , in fact he looks like he has been around for a number of years - a sure sign of a quality player.
Duncan ... ...rewarding when players such as Marcus reply that faith shown in them.
Surely the best is yet to come .He has far from peaked . In fact at test level he is still on a learning curve and in my opinion he can only get better.
He scored a great hundred in the first test which England lost to Sri Lanka on the current tour . And no greater complement could come than the one from one of England's finest openers Mike Atherton.Athers said "he made us all ...

Advantages: Great prospect for the future Disadvantages: Could do with playing for a better side ie. Surrey
I am going to write about the star player on the Somerset side, MarcusTrescothick. After seeing him play in the previous four one day internationals for England i believe that he could do big things in the future not only in one day games but also on the test scene. I think that he should have booked himself a test place for sure against the Windies in the remaining tests. He is certainly better than Ramprakash. His performance today against the Windies was absolutely fantastic and him and Stewart ripped them to shreds. His bowling isn't too bad and he proved that by taking 2 wickets versus Zimbabwe. ...

Advantages: Internaional average of over 50 anyone? Disadvantages: Inexperience?
OK, so only 20 on thursday, but is there any reason why MarcusTrescothick shouldn't open in the next test? If I was cynical I would say that if he doesn't it's because of the county he plays for, and will probably be dropped for the constantly under-achieveing Ramprakash, who plays for the right county.
Hopefully the selectors will have the sense to keep him in the side and let him prove his ability, much as he has throughout the triangular series.
Let's just hope that he crashes 150 in the final and makes it impossible to drop him. ...

Advantages: Andy Caddick and Darren Gough Disadvantages: Too many 30+ players
Surely it is time that the Englnd cricket team gave youth a chance. Even though they won the triangular series the players involved in most of the games are nearly all on the wrong side of 30. Darren Gough is shortly set to join the 30 plus brigade, leaving only Andy Flintoff, Paul Franks and MarcusTrescothick. No wonder England struggle in the test arena when they continue to pick players the wrong side of 30, and who are not good enough anyway. When it is time for a change it seems as though it isthe young players who are discarded, such as Chris Schofield, and the "veterans" who are recalled, such as Robert Croft and now Graham Thorpe. Why not give youth a chance? After all, the current squad has little or no chance of beating Australia next summer. I am not saying tht all the older players should be dropped. Class players such as ...
