This is a review about my latest addiction – Mario Karts! The game is in simple terms a driving game where you can race in the different grand prix cups, against friends or random people online as well as a few other game options. I have never particularly enjoyed racing games on any games console as I am horrendous at them and lose all the time and in my frustration usually end up throwing the control at my opponents head and get banned from playing! We brought Mario Karts for the Wii as we were sold by the adverts where you have the whole family playing against each other using the Wii Wheels! We had also heard some friends saying how much they loved theirs and the next day had ordered the game on Amazon.
The game includes all the well known Mario Characters and you unlock access to some of them as you improve on the game. You can select Karts of Bikes to race with and there is plenty of variety to choose from.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Controls ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The promotion of the game shows players controlling their Mario Kart using the Wii Wheel. The wheel is nothing more than a plastic shell for the remote, but its design makes it worthwhile. You slot your Wii Remote horizontally into the wheel so that the buttons are facing you. We currently have three Wii Wheels and three remotes so the fact that there is no fiddling around to attach it is very useful as the remote can simply be pulled out of the wheel if you want to play a different game. The wheel has a hole where the end of the remote sits so that the main front sensor can be picked up by the Wii. This means that when selecting the settings in the Mario Karts game or when switching on the Wii you can use the remote whilst it is attached to the wheel by simply pointing the sensor towards the Wii as you would normally. The Wii Wheel has an additional button on the back of the wheel, which lines up with the “B” button on the Wii remote so that you can still use that button. That is it in terms of features of the Wheel. It seems a little ridiculous given how much it costs! But to give it credit – it is made of a thick white plastic and feels very robust so its not going to break easily. The Wii Wheel means that you can literally steer as you play. The wheel itself has no sensors, it is purely providing a shell for the remote but it works perfectly. You can steer round corners and do wheelies and tricks but pulling up the wheel. With your thumb on the button near the end to accelerate and easy access to the other buttons as needed,
With the Wii Wheel costing at least £7 each, Nintendo have provided alternative ways of controlling the game. You can simply use the Wii Remote in a horizontal position and use it the same as you would if it were in the Wii Wheel casing – I have tried this a couple of times out of
interest and whilst this method works fine, I much prefer using the Wii Wheel.
A further method of control is using the numchuck to control your steering – you plug the Wii Numchuck into the bottom of your Wii remote and you can use the analogue stick to steer with one hand and use the controls on the Wii remote in the other hand. This method also works well but I still feel doesn’t quite live up to the use of the Wii Wheel.
In addition to all of these, you can also use the game pads for the older Nintendo consoles such as the Game Cube to play the game. I am not quite sure why you would want or need to but I suppose they have just tried to cover every option! However, if you can get hold of a couple of extra Wii Remotes and Wii Wheels then it is definitely worth it as it makes game play intuitive and adds a bit of fun too!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Tracks ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ There are 32 different tracks to play on and you start off with access to 16 of these. The tracks are separated into Cups (the mushroom cup, the lightning cup, the banana cup etc). Each cup has 4 tracks and winning on one of the tracks will unlock other tracks or karts or characters. Some of the tracks are from previous Mario racing games and some are new to Mario Karts. There are a few tracks that are quite simple and I do prefer these as it gives me a better chance of winning! There are plenty of complicated tracks, which in a couple of cases I do feel are too complicated as you spend more time falling off the track than actually racing on it! Although I do feel that the extra features of the tracks make the game more exciting. Traditional racing games with clear tracks bore me to tears but with Mario Karts there are jumps, boost panels, things to avoid etc and this adds to the fun. My youngest brother is 9 and loves the bright interesting designs of many of the tracks, a couple he finds too hard to co-ordinate on but still shows some determination so they aren’t wasted on him. One slightly negative point here is that because the tracks are very detailed, it can make it hard to work out where you need to go at times, especially when playing on a split screen where you have to look quite carefully to work out which way to go!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Weapons ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ This is a feature of the game that I love – weapons! On each track there are coloured boxes with question marks on them – if you drive through them you pick up the contents of the box. There are a variety of weapons to help you slow down your opponents – things that you can throw at them to make them fall over or blow up, the ability to make them shrink as well as the ability to splatter ink across their screen so that they can see where they are going. You can also throw fake item boxes or bananas behind you for the others to slip up on. On top of these there are items you can pick up which will help you out – such as temporary invincibility, various speed boosts and the ability to grow huge and crush your opponents if you drive over them. If you are lagging behind it is likely that you will get the bullet out of a box – for a few seconds this steers you at a tremendous speed around the track. It means that players who aren’t doing too well still have a chance catching up with the other players and stops them becoming disheartened or bored of always coming last! The weapons and other items add a real fun aspect to the game and are one of the things that makes this game enjoyable to someone like me who normally hates racing games.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Single Player ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The single player mode gives you a few gameplay options. When playing as a single player you have a driving licence which records how well you are doing and any trophies that you have received. The main single player gameplay mode is to participate in the Grand Prix – you choose a cup you want to compete in which takes you through the four tracks and you need to try and get first, second or third place to get a trophy and unlock other levels, characters or karts. Each Grand Prix has three difficulty levels – starting with the 50cc cup. Each time you play you get given a grade to show how well you raced – this means that even when you have completed the cups the game still has potential as you want to improve your gameplay grades. In each Grand Prix race you play against 12 other players who you can use your weapons against and are likely to be blasted by theirs a few times!
Single player more also enables you to play solo in the time trials. This gives you three boost mushrooms and an empty track at your disposal so you can compete against yours and others previous time scores to get around the track the fastest. This one is quite good if you are feeling competitive but have no one around to play against as you can try and beat your friends/family’s fastest times and then delight in telling them once they return home!
The final option for single player gameplay is battle mode. Here you can play on specially designed tracks to either pop your opponents balloons or collect all the coins. I wasn’t very impressed at all with this mode of gameplay as it was too difficult and bored me which is real shame as it does seem to let the game down a bit.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Multi Player ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Multiplayer mode is where the game really excels. Playing against your friends and family is always an enjoyable experience and Mario Karts allows you to race alongside them and attack them with your weapons too! You can play with up to three other players assuming you have enough Wii remotes and each time you will race on four tracks of your choice and the overall winners will be decided. The split screen works well although when you are playing with for players it does seem quite small at first if you don’t have a huge TV but you get used to it quickly and it is brilliant to play against each other. The multi player racing is brilliant fun and is a great activity for the family to do together as it is suitable for all ages.
In multiplayer mode you can also play battles where you play on the same team or opposite teams to try and burst the other teams balloons or collect the most coins – again I feel that this is a real disappointment as it is too difficult and goes on for too long making it boring. I have not yet found anyone that particularly wants to play battle mode so this is a feature of the game that I feel will rarely be used, but at least the quality of the multi player racing makes up for this.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Online ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The ability to play against others online (for free!) is brilliant. You can play against others in the world or just on your continent in either single player or multiplayer mode. In this mode you get to vote for the course you want to race on and it is then picked at random from everyones votes. You race four races against the other players and it makes it much more interesting racing against real people. There is no way of being able to back out during a game other than resetting your Wii console, which although occasionally annoying does mean that people don’t tend to drop out halfway through a tournament.
On top of being able to play against strangers you can also play online against your friends. With your player licence you have a unique number which you can give to your friend and play against them online. I tried this out for the first time the other week – I had been talking to my friend on MSN messenger and she gave me her number. I added her and created a room which she promptly joined and we were able to vote for track and race against each other. This was fantastic as it worked so well I was mightily impressed! Although this has limitations as you would need to be online at the same time as your friends it means that you can arrange to meet up virtually and play together at a certain time. I love this feature, not only is it a great idea but it works so smoothly!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Graphics and Audio ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ The games is all 3D and the graphics are bright and interesting. Sometimes the screen looks a bit over complicated but the graphics are generally very good. There are lots of nice touches throughout the game as the Mii’s of your family are used throughout the tracks so in Coconut Mall one of the cars that runs you over in the parking lot could well have your partner or brother sitting in it!
The audio is ok. The music isn’t too annoying and is varied enough between tracks that you don’t get irritating tunes stuck in your head for the rest of the day. The sounds that effect you such as when something is about to hit you are played through the Wii remote. This makes it easy to distinguish whether something is about to happen to you specifically rather than your friends/family who are also playing.
So overall I am pretty impressed with both the graphics and the audio on this game, nothing really to complain about here.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Summary of the good ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Plenty of different tracks to race on
Good range of difficulty levels
Lots of characters, karts and bikes to choose from
Plenty to do in single player mode
Great multiplayer options
Ability to play online against others or against your friends
Good graphics and audio
Interesting range of weapons
Great fun
Suitable for all ages
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Summary of the bad ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The battle mode is too difficult and poorly designed
In 4 player mode the split screen is a little hard on the eyes
A couple of the tracks are a bit overly complicated
It is difficult to back out of a tournament when racing online which can be a bit irritating
Far too addictive meaning that I don’t get much of my dissertation done
Expensive at £35
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Overall ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ I really love Mario Karts, it is the sort of game that I would never have anticipated liking but I am totally addicted to it. There are a really good range of features and it has potential to keep the whole family entertained for a long time. It would be a great party activity as it is hilarious to watch other people playing too. I definitely recommend this game if you already have a Nintendo Wii. I cant quite give it 5 stars because of the disadvantages mentioned above but it is a close call! A great game.
