DS™ in dual-screen glory with new DS-only features! Utilizing the Touch Screen and stylus technology, players will make their favorite characters - including Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi and Tails - run faster, jump higher and compete like true champions. Up to four friends can connect wirelessly and compete for the much sought after gold medal in actual Olympic events from track & field to swimming in the ultimate showdown between Team Mario and Team Sonic.
the Hedgehog would be like. Everything from traditional platform games to complex role-playing titles have been suggested, but its fair to say nobody imagined that it would finally happen in the form of an athletics simulator. Its officially licensed from the 2008 Beijing Olympics though (Sega already had the license for their own more traditional tie-in) and contains all the usual events youd expect including the 100m sprint, swimming, judo, table tennis, hammer throwing and archery. Sega have even been talking about using the new Wii Zapper controller for a spot of clay pigeon shooting.More than twenty-five characters from both universes will be playable in the game, including not just Mario and Sonic but also Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Bowser, Doctor Eggman, Princess Peach and Amy. Other characters will have cameos as judges such as Cream the Cat and Toad. Youd expect some characters to be naturally better at some sports than others but each has their own strengths and weakness, with even Sonics incredible speed mitigated by his slow acceleration. The whole game is developed by Sega but overseen by legendary Nintendo creator Shigeru Miyamoto, with full tournament and missions modes as well as online leaderboards for all the different events. The name may sound like an April Fools joke at first but this crossover could well be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Harrison Dent

~~**~~ Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games ~~**
Bicep strain - not normally a condition I'd encourage, but for the sake of entertainment, it's a necessary bi-product. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (or M&S as I shall refer to it) has enthralled me for 2 full days now and finally it's completed and I'm exhausted.
Tesco lured us in and made us buy it originally for the princely sum of £34.95 and it basically sat in the drawer once we'd tired of playing against each other, however, I discovered that there are tons of missions and circuits to unlock as a single player. Unemployment finally has its uses and I'm a dab hand at table tennis and pole vault whilst my poor hard working lover is rubbish due to his lack of practice. It's true, training does pay off and I've probably got the hang of most of the events though some are infuriating to begin with.
M&S' gameplay is addictive - at the beginning you progress through the circuits with ease, then as new events are unlocked the fun really starts. In turn, the missions are also unlocked - each character has certain tasks that they must attain such as throwing the hammer a certain distance or coming third in a particular race - sounds easy but some are unbelievably frustrating until you achieve it which is when a smug grin is allowed to creep across your face and you can shout down the stairs that you've just got another world record and beaten his score. Cue stomping around and much muttering.
The graphics are nowt to write home about but then I've yet to be impressed by the Wii in this respect anyway. You don't buy the game to sit and look at it - it's for playing with, in which case it succeeds hands down. So I'll ignore the fact that the crowd are unrealistic and there's little detail in the environment on the basis that I don't care. Equally, the music and sound are bearable - the tunes are fairly repetitive but they don't distract from the overall enjoyment. The main point is how responsive the characters are to your movements and this completely eradicates any other minor niggles.
The Events: Athletics track are usually knackering and fast (eg 100m and hurdles) whereas the field events are more precise and with more button pressing (hammer throwing, triple jump and javelin). Shooting games are precision based and difficult for those with Parkinson, the DTs or me (apparently you're only supposed to tilt the numchuk rather than waving it wildly around your head like some kind of demented monkey on speed but how was I to know). Swimming is quite tiring but it's more about timing than actual speed of controller movement. Trampolining is excellent fun as you're required to perform various tricks on which you're graded. Fencing is easy once you get the hang of it as is the table tennis.
Unlockables: There's probably some hidden ones that I've not found yet and I don't mind being corrected so feel free to let me know but I've managed to unlock pole vault, rowing, archery, high jump, various 400m running ones that I don't like, vault and many 'dream' events which are basically normal events but with an exciting twist.
The basic instructions for each event can be found in the manual but luckily for me as I'm too lazy to read, the kind people of Wii tell you which buttons to press at each point in the event. Some events do require both the remote and the numchuck and it's better with both hands as most people will agree. You can chose to play a single event (up to 4 players), the aforementioned circuits (up to 4 players), missions (single player), some rubbish Olympic mini-games and check out your records - World and Olympic scores are saved so you can rub them in your partners face as proof of your superiority. You chose to play as one of the many characters such as Sonic, Mario, Wario, Tails etc or use your own Mii to really create the illusion of winning the Triple Jump at the Beijing Olympics as it's probably not going to happen in real life - though who knows - only 5 years ago I was picked for the GB Olympic Bobsleigh (though fate landed a cruel blow and I've not quite recovered from my near brush with fame). The age guidance of 3+ is fair for the simpler games - I know that I'm old and decrepit but I find some of the more advanced games really hard, however, they're still enjoyable.
It's harmless fun though it could end a few relationships and this evening my arm's so painful a court case is looming, or I may just work through the pain and attempt to get more World records.
Thanks for reading.

Advantages: All your old favourites, fun for everyone, lots to do Disadvantages: You need stamina. oh dear.
...old and new Sonic and Mario games. You will know most, if not, all of the characters you can use in this game and if you don't, then you can also play with your own "Mii" character (for those unfamilliar with the Wii, a Mii is a little virtual you that you can play a lot of the games with)
After a vodka or two (highly recommended if you want a good giggle) I set the game up and, after setting my friend up with her look-a-like, off we went.
In lane ... ...For those who loved Mario Kart 64, you will L.O.V.E The dream race. It is Mario Kart, minus the kart and plus a lot of running action. For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, trust me - lots and lots of fun.
The ultra competative will enjoy the hall of fame which can link up to the world wide stats if you so choose to go for a record and for those of you who just like to bask in your glory, there is a trophy cabinet section ...

Advantages: Makes great use of the wii controller, good for multi- or singleplayer, exercise Disadvantages: none for me.
...who are all from the Mario games on Nintendo or Sonic's Sega games, for example you can play as Tails, Yoshi, Amy, and even Princess Daisy, who my friends tell me is from the first Mario adventure. Each of them has their own strengths: for example sonic is fast, but dr robotnik (annoying called dr eggman in this game) is really strong. This means that if you're doing a 100m or something then you will have a better chance with a fast player, but you ... ...that I like most about Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is that it's a lot of fun to play with friends, as none of the games are one player. As long as you have a wii remote per player you can play most of the events, although several of them require a nunchuk per person as well, which is a bit annoying because they're £15 each. However this only affects a couple of games, so its not much of a problem.
Fortunately, Mario and Sonic is still fun ...

Advantages: Hours of fun, for the whole family Disadvantages: You arms can ache.
...on the Sega consoles and Mario on the Nintendo console. So I was amazed when I noticed the both sonic and Mario had been brought together for the first time in this Olympic Games wii game.
OLYMPIC GAMES
This is unlike any other older Mario of Sonic Platform game, it is basically made up of many mini games, which are based around the Olympic Games.
The object of the game is to compete against the computer or other opponents, and gain a winning ... ...teenager from the Sonic and Mario Days.
From the Mario selection you have Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Daisy, Yoshi, and Peach. All of these characters are different and they are sometimes faster, stronger and have more stamina than other characters, so it is best to check there profile when you need to complete an event that needs the character to be strong.
The Sonic characters consist of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Blaze, Vector, Dr. ...

Advantages: Lots Of Events Disadvantages: No Online, Some Poor Events
...has joined in with Nintendo's Mario this time. The reason for this pairing up is purely commercial.
You can control a myriad of characters from the Mario and Sonic games, or you can play as your Mii character, I always do. Each character has different characteristics and handle events subtly differently. The events are split into the relevant categories of Track, Field, Gymnastics etc... There are nine categories in total.
Some events however are ... ...a rowing like motion with the two controls while pressing two specified buttons at the same time. Damn frustrating. The game is also too low, by this is mean too much waiting between events for the medal ceremony etc that can be skipped but still takes time.
They have tried to make use of the wii remote and nanchuck as much as possible, although constantly unplugging the nanchuck for some events can become a pain. Some work better than others. Some ...

Advantages: lots to do, great fun, great graphics, good for family of all ages Disadvantages: my arms got tired very quickly, some bits were too tricky
...tells you everything. It is Mario and Sonic at the olympics doing normal olympic games. The game has fed off the excitement of the Beijing olympics so now I wonder if anyone will buy it. There are 24 events that you can play on which are all based on events you would see at the olympics. You can play these events either in single match or circuit mode. In single match mode you choose to play only one of the events at a time, in circuit mode there ... ...characters so whether you prefert Mario or Sonic doesn't matter. There are some events that seem really easy to complete whereas others seem just too hard. For example, the swimming relay can really make your arms ache whereas rowing or archery are the complete opposite. The downfall to the game is the events like running and swimming where you're arms get tired from waving the remote and nunchuck around so you want to stop playing sooner. But because ...

Advantages: Good fun game for all the family. Disadvantages: Hard to unlock new levels and new games
...We got this game in the bundle we got with the Wii, at first we didn't play it at all, we were a little obsessed with Carnival Games, but then we thought we'd give it a go, and its actually good, the only thing wrong with it is that its hard to unlock new levels which is annoying after you've played the games a few times!! Its very active as well, you have to move around alot to play some of the games on here, which is good...means you get yourself a little fitter!!
Its a fun game to play, and you can play in multiplayer mode which is great, and in competition mode you can compete for points like in the real olyimpic games!! :-D
Its a game for kids and adults alike, and is quite easy to learn the contols of most of the games!! Personally my fav is the shooting or the trampolining!! :-D...

Advantages: great all round game Disadvantages: n/a
...Once again another great game in the Nintendo DS range, I do think that you cannot beat Mario and Sonic at the OlympicGames on Wii, but I do think that this is a great similar game that is on a portable console. This is a great game where Mario and Sonic to create one of the fastest selling games in a long time.
This game has 16 Olympic from track and field, archery, skeet shooting, trampoline as well as Olympic events exclusive to the DS, such as Cycling pursuit and 10m platform and it has 8 unlockable Dream Events as you compete to get a gold medal.
There are three game modes Single match mode, where players can pick the event that they want to take part in, Circuit Mode, where you pick a series of events to compete in to the make the gaming last longer and Mission mode where where players have their athletic ability tested by...
