"It's Nintendos way to get lazy kids fit" is how I described this to my rather unenthused friend the night I brought my Wii over so we could have a drink and a play around.
"PAH! Get REAL!" was her response.
This, if you cannot tell, is the Wii version of the olympics.
The first stroke of genius was combining the two sets of uber famous characters from old and new Sonic and Mario games. You will know most, if not, all of the characters you can use in this game and if you don't, then you can also play with your own "Mii" character (for those unfamilliar with the Wii, a Mii is a little virtual you that you can play a lot of the games with)
After a vodka or two (highly recommended if you want a good giggle) I set the game up and, after setting my friend up with her look-a-like, off we went.
In lane 1 - Mii !!!!!! In lane two...Mii !!.... Ok, so that's a slight annoyance. The game can't handle your name
if you play as yourself. You are forever known as Mii. If, however, you heeded my earlier advice and went for the vodka, it actually turns into a source of much amusement!
So after losing pathetically to the computer for a few rounds, waving our arms around like total idiots and actually breaking a sweat, my friend sits down and declares that "Lazy kids will DIE if they are given this Ryan!! IT RULES!!!!"
I have to agree! For the less fit of us, this game comes as a fair work out. The arms will ache for a day or two, but you will feel good about the fact you now get "excercise" (Unless you are one of those greek god types, in which case you won't need THIS to get your daily dose of heart-attack-inducing movements)
You can also play with up to 4 players if you have the floor space for four people to be jostling for first position.
As for the games themselves, they have many a mode. You can play either by yourself or against your friends. You can play missions to gain medals and stars, do circuits to ...gain medals and stars, dance around like a total idiot and still feel really cool.
The range of games to start with is a little bit pants to tell you the truth, but it soon sorts its self out. The game is built so that the more you play it, the more events, tracks and circuts unlock. As far as I can see there is no winning involved (which can only be seen as a good thing for myself since I lose...a lot.)
Once the game starts to unfold there are a TONNE of events as wide ranging as the olympics themselfs and each event will give you a description of how to play before hand which is rather handy. Keeps you doing the right things wether you be swimming, throwing a pointy stick, rowing, running, bouncing on a trampoline, archery, fencing or falling over breathless.
On top of this game knocking seven shades of something unpleasant out of my stamina, it also takes a jab right for your brain. There are some events that require you to do more than just wave manically and hope for the best. Infact most actually prefer you to use some sort of co-ordination and skill to achieve your goals! Well done you, Nintendo!
Just to make this even more appealing (and slightly more like a mario/sonic game) Nintendo have came up with the idea of "Dream Events". This is basically a random event (so far I've only unlocked two, Dream race and Dream fencing) but they throw in some cool special moves that you'd probably get thrown out of the olympics for using (such as planting bananas, bombs and other such delights round the track)
For those who loved Mario Kart 64, you will L.O.V.E The dream race. It is Mario Kart, minus the kart and plus a lot of running action. For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, trust me - lots and lots of fun.
The ultra competative will enjoy the hall of fame which can link up to the world wide stats if you so choose to go for a record and for those of you who just like to bask in your glory, there is a trophy cabinet section on the game too.
Price wise it is much the same as any other game out there for the Wii. No grumbles there.
This is a very playable and incredibly social game that WILL get you out of your seat and (if you are like me) put you right back in it when you finally switch off. Its easy enough for your grannie to play and lets face it, she's going to kick your butt!

Advantages: lots to do, great fun, great graphics, good for family of all ages Disadvantages: my arms got tired very quickly, some bits were too tricky
Advantages: Lots of sports, can play with balance board, ability to play with a mii, dream events are fun. Disadvantages: No real story, Balance Board controls poorly on most mini-games, might get boring quickly.
Advantages: Some great events and a chance to dress your Mii up for winter. Disadvantages: This game will hold your attention, but for how long is a different matter.
