Cashing In On The Olympics?
========================

It can hardly have escaped your attention that the Olympic Games has been held in China and "Team GB" did quite well all things considered. So sales of this game must be up. This time Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog has joined in with Nintendo's Mario this time. The reason for this pairing up is purely commercial.

You can control a myriad of characters from the Mario and Sonic games, or you can play as your Mii character, I always do. Each character has different characteristics and handle events subtly differently. The events are split into the relevant categories of Track, Field, Gymnastics etc... There are nine categories in total.

Some events however are total turkeys such as rowing, where you have to maintain a rowing like motion with the two controls while pressing two specified buttons at the same time. Damn frustrating. The game is also too low, by this is mean too much waiting between events for the medal ceremony etc that can be skipped but still takes time.

They have tried to make use of the wii remote and nanchuck as much as possible, although constantly unplugging the nanchuck for some events can become a pain. Some work better than others. Some are just too difficult, such as the triple jump, where it's too hard to get the timing right. You'll have arms like Popeye if you play the 4x4 Swimming very often.

There are also so called dream events that are nothing to do with any Olympic events, they're just supposed to be a bit of fun but I really don't like them at all. Too gimmicky.

One frustrating feature that should have been ironed out when the game was play tested is that you have to reselect your character between events. It should remember it until you change it, just like Wii Sport does. This is most annoying when you want to do single events.

There is no online play to speak of, you can just share your records. This is a great shame as there was surely a huge potential for competition with real life human opponents. In fact this is the biggest missing element to the game and would surely have helped sales.

So, summing up, this is a good game, I enjoy playing it but it will never be played as much as Wii Sports has and continues to be. Some areas could be improved but on the whole enjoyable (and a bit knackering too).

The biggest plus is the sheer number of events you can play, some are better than others but most are good. However, the game does not have much longevity, after you've played the events a few times they do get tedious. It is a good game, but it could have been so much better, it really is a missed opportunity. If you can pick it up cheap then it's worth it. You'll Probably get cheaper now the Olympics has finished, or maybe wait for the re-badged 2012 Olympics version.
