I popped in Marks & Spencer's on my way home from work the other day to pick up a few essentials (something I try to avoid - there are just too many temptations), I spied this little dessert and decided that I need a treat, after all it was from the Count on Us range and was a good alternative to a bar of chocolate.
The packaging for this dessert will not blow you away, the pot itself is a small round bowl on it's own little stand, it's made of clear plastic and you can see the layered dessert inside. The peel off lid tells us that this is a "black cherry compote with chocolate mousse and chocolate sponge" there is a picture of a lone black cherry and all the nutritional information.
THE TASTE TEST
The first layer is a chocolate mousse decorated with some chocolate swirls, the mousse is really light and airy but tastes so wonderfully rich and chocolaty, I could detect an alcoholic taste almost as if brandy had been seeped through (I checked the ingredients and there's nothing to suggest what this could be). The next 'layer' is the chocolate sponge, and in my opinion this might just as well not be in here! There was hardly any of it and it really did not add anything in way of flavour nor substance, in fact it was a bit soggy if anything. The final layer was the black cherry compote; this had a real luxurious texture, plenty of juicy cherries in a thick sauce, the cherries themselves tasted fresh and not at all synthetic. The combination of the cherries and the chocolate mousse was a match made in heaven and was very similar to a black forest gateau without all the calories.
Each pot contains less than 2% fat and is only 130 calories; they do however contain Cow's milk, eggs, soya, wheat, gluten and a source of phenlalanine. We are also warned that these are not suitable for nut allergy sufferers.
M&S also warn us that whilst care has been taken to remove all cherry stones, some may remain, didn't have any though :o)
PRICE AND AVAILABILTY
Since this is from the count on us range it's only available in Marks & Spencers, and will set you back the princely sum of 79p for a single pot.

These are simply divine, I really felt like I had had a special treat when I had finished it but at the same time it was quite healthy - I will definitely be buying these again - 5 stars from me.
