I don't often eat ready meals but when I do they are always from M&S who have a massive range. My favourite though is this one which costs £3-29. Sometimes they have offers such as buy 2 save £1 or similar. At the moment they are on 5 for 4 which isn't much good for someone like me who just has one now and again.
The product comes in a cardboard sleeve which has a picture of the finished product which really makes you fancy it when you are in the shop and you feel hungry! This sleeve can be removed to reveal a black plastic tray that is divided into two compartments - One contains two large pieces of braised steak in gravy with carrots and onions and the other contains mashed potato that has been 'forked.' This is covered by a clear plastic film across the top which you must pierce. This remains in situ during cooking. One thing which I fell foul of once was the plastic sleeve wasn't properly attached and air had got to the potatoes and when they were cooked they tasted really dry and had no flavour so now I always check this in the shop but feel a little funny doing so as I don't want people to think I am tampering with the food!
The product takes 25 minutes to cook at 190C degrees. When the meal is ready you obviously have to remove the plastic cover which is quite hard to do without burning yourself cos all the steam starts to escape. You can then either eat it out of the tray or slop it onto a plate which doesn't look very appetising so I usually opt for the former!
These meals vary quite alot - Sometimes the meat can be gorgeous and tender and really flavoursome and other times it can be so tough it tastes like shoe leather! The gravy is tasty, as is the mashed potato - My only criticism would be the distinct lack of carrots and onions.
Value for money:
In the scheme of things, £3-29 is not alot of money, particularly for something from M&S, but if two of you wanted a meal then you couldn't share as there would be nowhere near enough, so you would be talking well over £6 - Call me tight but I think that is pushing it just a bit!
I would however recommend these as when they are good they are really good and my own particular serving suggestion in some ground black pepper on the potato.
