Packaging: Oh well done M&S! The packaging is very expensive looking, very smart and has a certain air of snootiness about it. The pack is in the main a dull matt black, but the pack has a relief pattern (that can only be displayed as a sort of ‘splat’!) in shiny black on it. There is a flash across the front about an inch across in the middle in a deep pink with three squares of photographs – one of thinly sliced onions, one of a really evil looking cheddar (the kind that has salt crystals in it it is so strong!), and the last of delicious looking crisps - followed by a rectangle stating ‘fantastically crunchy crisps, deliciously seasoned for twice as much flavour as regular crisps.’ Sounds fantastic!
On the rear the pink flash continues and placed over the top we have the ingredients list which is oil, potatoes and ‘caramelised onion and mature cheddar seasoning’. Unusually there follows a fairly comprehensive list of the spices involved and the preservatives and colourings used. None of these sound too scary and they actually include dried cheese – the real stuff (allegedly) and dried onion.
It tells us these crisps contain cows milk. Must be something to do with the cheese.
We then have the horror story of calories and all that sort of thing with the fat, calories and salt thoughtfully in bold. As this 55g bag has 285 cals, 18.2 gm fat and 0.9 of salt, they’re probably right to do so.
The left of the rear has a very blow your own trumpet, aren’t we marvellous type spiel, , suitable for vegetarians flash, made in denmark, recyclable mark and the find out more web address www.marksandspencer.com. Don’t bother – it’s rubbish and it doesn’t tell you anything.
Price: 55p for a little bag?! They’d better be good.
Smell
On opening the bag the smell is not quite right –overpowering. Greasy, and with a hint of cheese – but almost as if there is too much flavouring rather than the smell of a block of cheddar.
Appearance/Texture The crisps certainly look filling – much thicker than a run of the mill crisp. They feel horrible in the hand – very moist and gungy – the powder of the flavouring is thick and comes off all over you. Beware your clothes. They are also a rather disturbing orange colour. They have attractive flecks of dried herbs on them.
Taste Disappointing and even vaguely unpleasant. They are greasy, the cheddar flavouring is there, but whatever the dried cheese process is, it has the same unpleasantness as dried parmesan cheese (one of cookings great aborations). These took some getting through and they were so oily I could not finish the bag. YES I REALISE THIS IS SOMETHING OF AN EVENT! These will stay with you for some time after you have eaten them and they repeat terribly.
To Sum Up These beautifully packaged, damned expensive crisps were a terrible let down. The taste was frankly nasty, and somehow M&S got this wrong because they tried too hard.
