Yippee – chocolate ‘may provide cardiovascular health benefits’! Well that’s the claim made in a fascinating article on the website cocoapro.com. This is the website, which is on the Midnight Mars wrapping, and which is worth a visit if you are interested in finding out any more about chocolate e.g. its history, manufacture and possible health benefits.
Now that I feel less guilty in indulging in yet another chocolate bar I can relax and tell you a bit about the Midnight Mars limited edition. The wrapping caught my attention as it is possibly the most attractive that I have seen on any chocolate bar. It has the usual Mars logo in red highlighted with cream but the background is a gorgeous two tone blue with a full moon peeping out from behind a dark cloud. The moon could be the white nougat and the dark clouds the dark chocolate. Midnight is written in white lettering against the dark cloud. Very atmospheric and moody and certainly eye-catching. I love the name, which is so different and yet perfectly captures the essence of the bar in one word.
The bar is 10 cm long, 3 cm wide and 1.5 cm deep and weighs 55.2g. It cost me 34p at my local Nisa store. As it is a limited edition it may only be in the shops for a short duration so I would try one now. There is no nutrition information on the pack although the ingredients are listed, of which sugar features heavily. They warn that there may be traces of peanut in the product.
On opening the wrapper, a tantalising smell of dark rich chocolate wafted out. The bar is completely covered in dark almost black chocolate with smooth sides and two ripples running along the top of the bar.
The first bite gave a predominant flavour of dark chocolate, slightly bitter and powerful. Of course, the first and last bites have the most chocolate as they take in the ends. The second bite was better balanced and the chocolate mixed with the silky smooth caramel and soft white nougat to give a wonderful flavour. I could taste the nougat but the caramel taste was very much in the background. The caramel is a lovely bright golden and the nougat a clean looking off white. As I bit into the bar the chocolate clung to the caramel and didn’t drop off which can happen with other bars. The overall texture is soft and hence is easy to eat and yet not so soft as to be dropping bits of chocolate everywhere. The taste of the dark chocolate lingers on in your mouth long after you have finished the bar.
This Midnight Mars completely satisfied my chocolate craving and I felt contented when I had eaten it. I enjoyed it more than the ordinary Mars bar feeling that the blend of ingredients complemented each other more than the standard milk chocolate bar. I also thought it less sickly despite the dark rich chocolate coating. I am not sure that it would appeal to youngsters, as it may be too strong a flavour. I could imagine this product being produced in mini versions, which would be ideal as after dinner chocolates with coffee.
Masterfoods in Slough have produced an excellent good value product and I hope that they decide to extend the limited edition into one that is permanently on the shelves.
Thanks for reading and hope I’ve tempted you to try one.
Advantages: it's chocolate! Disadvantages: some people hate dark chocolate!
Mars chocolate needs no introduction; its reputation speaks for itself. Most people love an occasional Mars Bar (myself included) and I was thrilled with the opportunity to try a dark chocolate version of my favourite snack.
I found this new, limited edition bar in my local newsagent, out of the blue. Usually when a limited edition product is released, to gain people’s interest the appropriate company launches a rigorous campaign of television ... ...applied to Mars Midnight, which I found by chance among other chocolate bars.
The reason I saw the bar was purely the packaging, which kept my interest from first glance and evidently made me take it to the counter and fork over my money. The main feature of the package is the usual Mars logo, which is well contrasted by a black background. An image of the night sky is plastered onto the front comprising of an eerie photograph of the moon hidden ...

Advantages: Good combination, not as sickly as the usual variety Disadvantages: You won't like them if you don't like plain chocolate
...been a huge fan of Mars Bars. In fact, I’m not really a big chocolate eater. I would normally opt for something savoury, as you'll know from my varied opinions about crisps. Nonetheless, on a miserable, wet afternoon, we all need a bit of a blood sugar boost, and as there seem to have been an awful lot of miserable, wet afternoons lately, I’ve been eating a lot more chocolate. I always find traditional Mars Bars to be very sickly and ... ...But something about these new Mars Midnight bars seemed to call to me as I peered through the glass of the naughty things vending machine.
There is something rather tempting about these bars. The name itself is suggestive of a dark, mysterious treat and this is reflected in the moody, moonlit picture that graces the little wrapper. It’s not a design that seems targeted towards children. I get the distinct impression that Mars have gone for ...

Advantages: They Make A Change From The Usual Mars Bar Disadvantages: They Appear Hard To Locate
...have a pack of 5 Mars Midnights in my fridge, although sadly, only one is for me. Anyway, my bar soon got took out of the fridge and sampled!
Each bar is individually wrapped in packaging mimicking the outer package which held the 5 bars. Once you rip open the nicely designed package you can smell a faint caramel aroma, but it isn't that strong. The bars are roughly 4 inches long, 3 cm wide, as well as about 1.5 cm deep. The chocolate bar is the ... ...Hence why it is called Mars Midnight.
Your teeth will easily sink through the dark crisp chocolate, which has a bitter taste. You will hear the chocolate crack slightly and your taste buds will soon be greeted by a nougat centre, similar to that from Milky Ways, although it isn't as milky tasting as that. The dark chocolate mixes with the nougat to make a new texture and flavour, which is much more apparent in the mouth. As you begin to swallow ...

Advantages: All that lovely dark chocolate Disadvantages: Limited edition
...Slough from the House of Mars hath brought us this new delight, it appears, following ye trendie ways of enticing custom with limited edition products.
Thus to Ye Olde Spar in Pricey Lane by coach, where after much gaye banter and ado did I set mine eyes upon this new Mars Midnight. With trembling hands I did buy one, the damage to my purse being a modest 6 farthyngs (33 pence in ye new-fangled currency), which methinks is a modest fee for a dish ... ...a portion of ye new Mars Midnight with much impertinence. “Why dost thou not share thy new delicacy?” she cried, “dost thou intend to keep it all for thy poxy self?”. “Hold thy tongue, woman”, said I “for it was my hard-earned farthyngs that bought it!”. In haste to my study, where I could at last gaze upon my Mars Midnight away from mine wife, its plaine chocolate body shrouded in a wrapping of curious design, and declared myself lucky to have acquired ...

Advantages: Not as sickly as the regular mars bar Disadvantages: tastes burnt!
I am not a big fan of marsbars, I find them too sickly. But nevertheless I felt it was my duty to try a Marsmidnight.
It is essentialy a marsbar covered in dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, and the centre is white as opposed to a brown colour.
It is and a wrapper much the same as a regular Marsbar except it has midnight written on it to and the words limited edition!
It isn't as sickly tasting as a regular marsbar, but seems to have a burnt taste to it, not sure if this comes from the chocolate or the centre, but I would guess at the chocolate. The chocolate in nice and glossy when you first open the wrapper.
The caramel a soft and sticky as caramel should be! Ane the nougat filling is soft and light, pretty much like a milky way bar filling. In fact this is probably best described as a milky way with caramel ...

Mars a day helps you work, rest and play" then more recently "Pleasure you can't measure"
Mars changed its name to "Believe" back in July 2006, to support the England Team during the Fifa world cup.
Since 1932, many Mars varieties have been produced; some as limited editions and others which will be around for a while, these different varieties include:
Dark and light, chocolatebarMidnight, chocolatebar with plain chocolateMars eggs, around at Easter
Mars milk drinks
Mars ice creams
Mars Planets.
Mars is now famous around the world, and is a favourite in Australia and New Zealand as well as over here. Which one is your favourite?
Thank you for reading my review. I'm off shopping now and will get a few to keep in the cupboard, for when I need a sweet treat.

Advantages: Much nicer flavours and textures than the chocolate bar version Disadvantages: Expensive; too small
throat leaving you cool and satisfied.
These usually come as packs of 4 in a black box designed in the same way as each individual wrapper. Alone, they cost about £1.98 (about 50p each - 20p more than a normal MarsBar) but you can get them in special offers like 2 for £2 etc..
However, they are osold seperately in the news agents for about 50p also, alongside 'MarsMidnight' which is basically the same but with a dark chocolate covering (more bitter and less creamy sweet).
The box exclaims - 'Real Dairy Icecream'. Per bar, there are 168kcal and 9.6g of fat which is less than a normal MarsBar but a lot for such a small treat.
Overall, I love these as a refreshing change from a sickly chocolatebar on a hot day. I actually prefer the flavours and textures of the chocolate and caramel to the original chocolatebar version but I ...
