These people sell primarily, as far as I can make out, by phone and by direct mail. I was with them for many years - but now I know better.... There were two key problems. One was that they were supposed to tell me when/if I needed to update my contract with them to get the best deal. Not only did they not do that, but I 'mysteriously' didn't get their mailshots which should've alerted me to the fact that I wasn't exactly getting value for my 20 pounds a month. Then I caught up with the rest of the world and demanded a better deal - that 'mysteriously' took some time to put in place. A year or two later it became apparent that time and phones had moved on - but again i hadn't been offered an updated deal. So I cancelled my account. Or, should I say, I tried to. But 'mysteriously' an avalanche of emails and letters were never received by that company. In all it took me six month to get rid of them and another six months down the line I'm still trying to get some of my money back.
Advantages: Good company, good staff Disadvantages:
I have just read an opinion advising people to avoid Martin Dawes. I don't disagree I just don't think they are worse than anyone else.
A couple of years ago I worked for their customer service department, and although like all companies we were understaffed there were some very good people working there who had a genuine wish to help customers, something I find is not always true of some customer service departments.
The criticisms levelled at ... ...for the Service Providers is that they get a lot of monet from the network ofr connecting new customers on new number, so can offer a good deal to new customers. This means existing customers get left out and feel cheated. There is no easy solution to this. Many times I wanted to offer an existing customer a good deal on an upgrade but was not able to. Without the massive subsidy from the network that a new customer would generate the Service Provider ...

Quick review of MartinDawes
my 82 year old dad order DAB radio - the website showed low stock - they debitted his account tho they had no stock. After 5 months, he requested a refund - he was promised a card refund within 3 days - not done. He phoned again and they said card refund not possible, he was promised cheque within 3 days - not arrived. Phoned again said would send cheque within 10-15 days - we are still waiting. Very disappointing overall. ...

Advantages: quick delivery and decent stock / prices Disadvantages: Cusomer care is terrible
My experience with this retailer has been all bad. I expect a certain degree of customer care when requesting support and advice - it is not there. In my dealings with them I certainly got the impression they were understaffed but also complete and utter lack of customer focus. They take your money and the sales support is non existent. I would never use this lot again not even if they offered me a lifetime warranty with it. I believe they used to ... ...the line they have lost their way. I believe that parts of the business have now gone into liquidation so perhaps the writing is on the wall for the rest of the business. Customer care is important to me and that is why they score so low with me. ...

Advantages: the deal was ok at the time of purchase Disadvantages: poor customer service
martindawes telecommunications is the company which currently bills many customers of bt cellnet. it used to bill vodafone customers too and this is where i encountered problems.
having signed up to a vodafone talk plan several years ago, i saw out my 12 month contract without any delay in payments and in december '99 inquired about cancelling my contract and was told i could do this by sending an e-mail to the disconnection department. i duly did so and a few days later i called customer services who confirmed that it had been received. when after two months, i still had not been disconnected and was still being billed for calls WHEN I HADN'T EVEN HAD THE PHONE SWITCHED ON i called customer servicesto demand an explanation. i was then informed that no correspondance concerning disconnection had ever been made, but after i recalled ...

Advantages: Good packages Disadvantages: Only good if calling other BT Cellnet phones
I was with Vodaphone initially, having bought the connection through broker MartinDawes, who have since been assimilated by BT Cellnet. MartinDawes were a cowboy outfit of the highest order. The 500 free off-peak minutes per months which were part of the package suddenly became 250 per month, despite the fact that I had it *in writing*. I was constantly on the phone to these people and their atrocious but inevitable Irish call-centre monkeys. It is because of MartinDawes that I will NEVER AGAIN pay phone bills through Direct Debit, as I can't count on staying within my overdraft limit! Anyway, MartinDawes are now no more and my account (including my original number, which is cool) are now with Cellnet. Annoyingly, none of my friends are on Cellnet, so calling them is rather expensive! Still, now that the package works properly ...

Advantages: Range of services Disadvantages: Lack of coverage
I was persuaded to move from Vodafone to Cellnet earlier this year because the monthly line rental was lower. I got a free Nokia 3210 from MartinDawes (subsequently BT Cellnet, and now Lumina). The first thing I noticed about Cellnet is that the coverage was not as good. Particularly here in the North West, just around the corner from the Lumina Customer Centre as well!! Their services are much the same as the other suppliers with the call costs still about the same. There is not much to distinguish Cellnet from all the other networks out there. At the end of the day it depends on the package you want and the phone of choice. ...
