Marks and Spencer’s launched the Martyn Maxey range within their larger stores back in 2002, taken from his award winning hair salon in Mayfair, London and also awarded one of the top 5 stylist awards by Vogue back in 2003. Hair is an asset, I always find that if my hair looks good I feel a million times more confident and self assured when going out. I also think that it can really make a person look more attractive if they’re hair is shiny and groomed – even the most plain girl can be completely transformed with conditioned and spruced up hair. Previously I’ve always relied on salon products to keep my hair looking good, with the odd splurge at Boots when a new product comes out promising to “completely transform your hair, giving you the body of Kate Beckinsale” or something equally unobtainable by using a single shampoo I’ve found!
While on the obligatory Sunday morning shop to Marks and Spencers to stock up on food for the week with my mum, I managed to escape helping her decide if she should continue with her diet and buy the low fat cheese or just to blow it and get the creamy one, and escape over to the health and beauty section of the store. When I was younger I always used to be embarrassed when my mum bought me clothes from Marks and Spencers when I was about 10, after all it was considered “sad” to shop there when Tammy Girl was much more appealing but recently I’ve started to like quite a few things there and that’s how I came across the Martyn Maxey range.

The range boasts extras that claim to visibly improve the quality of your hair including a UV filter to protect from damage caused by environmental stressors along with Vitamins A, E and B5 to help moisture and shine – overall creating smooth, shiny and soft hair. The range consists of approximately 20 products at present which are priced quite reasonably from £4 - £6 so in line with most products on the market and even cheaper than certain salon products including Toni & Guy.
Products are all tastefully packaged, the smaller items come in hard glass bottles and the larger ones in thick plastic. All have the trademark silver lid which corresponds with the “MM” signature of Martyn Maxey which also features on all products. The containers are all translucent so the colour of the product clearly shows through – the majority are brightly coloured orange, pink or blue with some creamy white coloured ones also.

Dry Hair
Moisturising Shampoo (£4)
Moisturing Conditioner (£4)
Deep Enriching Masque (£5)
Frizz Calming Serum (£3)
3 Minute Intensive Conditioner Sachet (£1)
The moisturing shampoo and conditioner recommend that you use them both together to achieve the best results and I’d definetly second that. My mum’s a keen user of these, she’s got fairly thick and quite dry hair and these products totally revitalise her hair – used regularly after 2 weeks hair will be appear and feel visibly softer. The deep enriching masque product comes in a small circular tub clearly distinguishable with a purple lid, the actual product is a white colour and quite thick in texture. Only a tiny amount is needed and once applied to your hair it feels like there’s a sticky coating on it but once washed off and dried it makes your hair unbelievably soft – a must for anyone who regularly dries out their hair using heated appliances! The frizz calming serum product comes in a small glass bottle, with a purple lid and sticker on the front. Very similar to most other serums on the market at present but the difference with this one is that it doesn’t make your hair at all greasy, no matter how much you apply. Unfortunately the bottle is rather small so does only last me about a month but this is reflected the reasonable price.
Fine Hair
Thickening Shampoo (£4)
Thickening Conditioner (£4)
Volume Building Mousse (£4.50)
Volumising Gel Spray (£4.50)
I can’t actually comment on these as due to having very thick hair, have never felt the need to give myself anymore of an afro than I already have!
Colour Treated Hair
Colour Protecting Shampoo (£4)
Colour Protecting Conditioner (£4)
Packaged in the typical Martyn Maxey packaging these products are a true heaven send! I’ve got light brown hair with blonde highlights and as such, my hair regularly dries out and the colour fades – but no more! These products are a true God send, I’ve previously tried other colour care products such as John Frieda’s blonde shampoo and found that with continuous usage my blonde doesn’t stay nice and honey coloured but goes a much more brassy, peroxide looking blonde.
All Hair Types
2 in 1 Shampoo (£4)
Straightening Balm (£5)
Glossing Spray (£6)
Root Lift Mousse (£4.50)
Styling Wax (£4)
Flexible Hold Hairspray (£4)
Firm Hold Hairspray (4)
Styling Gel (£4)
I’ve used the straightening balm and the glossing spray – both of which I’d recommend. The straightening balm, when used in conjunction with the frizz serum left my hair gloriously straight and sleek! With an added spritz of the non-greasy glossing spray I felt like I’d just had my hair done at the salon. The only downside to these products are that they do seem to be a little bit thicker than other products on the market – the shampoos and conditioners aren’t quite as viscous or runny as other products which I personally think is a great idea as it means they don’t run off your hand in the shower. The impracticality of this is unfortunately that sometimes they take that little bit longer to rinse out of your hair – to me that just means longer showers!
I’d definitely recommend Martyn Maxey products to anyone who likes to pamper themselves and is willing to spend that little bit extra on maintaining your hair. I’ve never come across a bad product yet and they really do leave my hair is the best condition, so go on treat yourself!
