Now when it comes to the contraceptive pill I consider myself to be quite an expert, well more so than my boyfriend anyway who is constantly telling me things he's heard about it on the TV or Tricia which really do not qualify him as a doctor... if only he'd listen!
* My Experience with The Pill *
When I was 13 I suffered from terrible period pains, so much so that I had to stay in bed for 2 days a month in absolute agony. As a result I was put on Mycrogynon which worked absolutely fine for me and after 6 months I came off it as my periods had settled down.
Then at 17 I decided to go back on the pill, this time for contraceptive purposes and also so I could regulate my periods. I was put back on Mycrogynon but it just didn't work for me, I stayed on it for less than 2 weeks as it made me sick, gave me head aches and dizzy spells too. That was it, I'd had it with the pill!
And then I turned 18, my life was really beginning and with my 18th Birthday came terrible spots, not acne at all, I'd only have 1 or 2 at a time but they'd be huge boils almost, that burst and were literally about 5mm in diameter - so bad that I had to wear a dressing a couple of times! And so I was put on Dianette which cleared up my skin no problem!
Last summer I learnt of some health risks associated with Dianette and also was beginning to feel sick on it as well as having terrible mood swings and so my doctor recommended I change to Marvelon.
** What is the Pill? **
The pill is generally taken to prevent pregnancy and does this by releasing a varied amount of female sex hormones which prevent an egg from being released from your ovaries, therefore preventing pregnancy (most of the time)!
The pill must not be taken if you think you may be pregnant, have cancer or a thrombosis, high blood pressure, severe diabetes, gall stones, sever liver disease or tumour or vaginal bleeding. It is also recommended that you reduce smoking and alcohol intake while taking the pill.
Side effects of the pill include: -
Thrombosis Breathlessness Dizziness or Fainting Nausea or Vomiting Vaginal bleeding Gallstones Headaches Mood Swings Changes in Sex Drive Changes in Vaginal Discharge Breast Pains
And so as you can see taking the pill isn't really all plain sailing whatsoever, that's why it's equally important that you find a pill that's best suited to your body and gives minimal side effects.
The pill is normally taken for 21 days with a 7 day break to enable you to have a period but Marvelon is also available in 28 day packs too.

HISTORY OF MARVELON
Marvelon was origionally brought out in the 1980's, it contatins 150g of microgram desogestrel and 30 microgram ethinylestradiol. This means it's a combined low-dose oral contraceptive.
To me this means nothing, I didn't really think about what my body would be taking in when taking the pill, all I cared about was not getting pregnant straight away. However the doctor assured me this was a safe and good pill to take at my age ... ...WORK?
Marvelon come's in a slim blue and white box, with three packs of pills in the box. Each pack is enough for one month. There are 21 pills in each pack( One a day), which easily pop out of the foil pouch, for convience there are the days of the week above each pill so you can easily see if you have taken the days pill. After taking the pills for 21 days, there is then a 7 day rest for your period, then after the 7 days you can move on to the ...

Marvelon is one of several different types of the pill which are manufactured by a company called Organon. This was the second kind of pill I had tried, after finding that another popular brand, Microgynon 30, was unsuitable for me. Advantages: Completely pain free periods! Disadvantages: Makes you a bit irritable at times
Marvelon is the second brand of pill I have been on. As the pill I tried before it put me through what was one of the worst experiences of my life, I didn't expect Marvelon to work half as well as it did and thought it was a nightmare just waiting to happen. However, 6 months later, I'm still happy to be on it.

Marvelon solved all of that from the very first month, and now they are completely painless. I dread ever going off this pill for any reason because I know it'll be straight back to how bad it was before! Whereas now not only are they completely painfree, but they also last for fewer days so it gets it over and done with much quicker. In conclusion, though there are side effects with this pill they are very small. And in my ...

Advantages: Prevents pregnancy, can help lower lipid levels. Disadvantages: Not good for smokers
Marvelon is a contraceptive for use as regular contraceptive. It contains both synthetic progesterone an synthetic oestrogen. These hormones act on the female genital tract and certain areas in the brain to prevent the release of an ovum (egg) from the ovaries, hence preventing pregnancy. MArvelon is different from the emmergency contraceptive Levonorgestrel (the morning after pill - Levonelle) in that it contains a much smaller amount of hormone. ... ...sex. Marvelon is designed to be taken at the same time each day for 21 days followed by a seven day pill free break, during which time, a withdrawel bleed occurs.
Recent evidence has shown that there is no harm in taking up to three packets of marvelon in a row without a break between each packet. This would give 63 days between each period, a godsend for me.
I started taking marvelon over five years ago and have had no problems with it whatsoever. ...

Advantages: Contraceptive cover Disadvantages: pain, depression, tender breasts, headaches, not safe to be on for too long
break.
Advantages:
* Works as a contraceptive
* Works as an acne treatment
Disadvantages:
* Didn't do anything for my acne
* My ovaries felt like shards of glass were being pushed through them on the 7-day break in particular.
* Not safe for long-term use.
* Tends to cause depression (possibly the higher oestrogen, but also the progestogen type)
* Ridiculous weight gain in spite of diet and exercise.
* Headaches and low moods.
* I felt irritable all the time and constantly cried.
* Very tender breasts - probably the higher oestrogen.
I would not write this pill off completely. I know of some great success stories from other acne and PCOS sufferers. Unfortunately not me though!
Nowadays there are safer pills available that will help acne and work as a contraceptive, such as Yasmin, Marvelon, Cilest, Mercilon ...
Advantages: None specific to this type of the pill Disadvantages: Unexpected depression, mood swings, panic attacks, spots and weight gain
This is the third contraceptivepill I have taken (first Dianette for five years, then Marvelon for nearly two)- I stopped the last two due to breakthrough bleeding. My doctor told me it might be better on microgynon. I am 4 months into it, the BTB is just as bad and (unlike the other two pills), this has made me MASSIVELY depressed, given me panic attacks and huge mood swings (as well as increased my appetite and made my skin a lot worse). I have never had any sort of problems like this on either of the other contraceptivepills and it has come completely out of the blue. I was going to try and stick it out to six months, incase the side effects faded, but they seem to be getting worse not better and I can't make myself feel this awful for another two months. I am really pleased this wasn't the first pill I was put on (as most people ...
I have tried a few different brands of contraceptivepills and so far Femodene has worked the best for me. I firstly tried Marvelon which I found made me feel quite ill, then I was on Microgynon for ages but then I found I kept on bleeding when I wasn't supposed to. This was inconveniant and could have been horrendously embarrassing for me. Fortunately I always felt this happening and dealt with it accordingly.
So, back down the doctors I went and told him my problems with it. He prescribed me Femodene and said it works well to promote regularity with your periods.
The packet I was prescribed holds 3 months worth in, 3 strips each holding 21 pills, so 63 pills altogether. I'm not sure if they make individual month long packets only. It suits me to only go to the docs when I'm ill which thankfully is not that often. Therefore ...
