Review of "Masai Mara National Park (Kenya)"
Masai Mara exceeded all of my expectations. I visited the park in September, after many of the animals began their migration, but even so I was stunned by the sheer numbers that remained. I could barely turn my head without seeing a lion, zebra, wildebeest, etc. I even managed to see all of the "Big Five" and a cheetah kill on my first day. The weather was fantastic and there were barely any flies or mosquitos to bother me.What sets apart Masai Mara from other African parks though is that you (your driver, that is) can drive off road instead of being confined to the set roads of parks like Krueger, Serengeti, Lake Nakuru, etc. This gives a more authentic experience as well as increasing the chances of seeing everything you want to see. The drivers are all in contact with each other and if one of them reports that there is, for instance, a leopard hanging out in a tree, your driver can take just about any route to get there, whether it be through a seemingly impenetrable stand of tries or through a water filled ditch.
If you go on just one African safari in your life make it Masai Mara. You will not regret it.
If you are interested in culture as well as wildlife, there are a number of Masai villages that accept visitors for a fee of about ten dollars. A Masai guide will show you around, take you into a home and have a group of young "warriors" dance for you. Unfortunately they seem most interested into trying to sell souvenirs though.
