It’s been three months since I’ve had full and permanent use of a laptop. It was taken from me back in July and as November knocks on the door under the pretence of trick-or-treaters, I find myself thinking a bit deeper about the situation. Last time I was able to actually sit down and write something properly was when it was about 30°C. I’m writing this at 18.49 and it’s pitch black out there. Back when I had the old laptop, the sun would be shining through the window into my face.

I’ve had a headache for about three weeks now and I went to the doctor’s last week. I had a locum because my proper doctor was on leave. She checked my blood pressure, signed me off work and gave me painkillers and told me, “go home and get some rest. You look awfully pale.”
Thanks. I went home and had a very relaxing week. Come Tuesday, there was a letter for me from Matercare. It contained two vouchers. One was to the tune of £999.99 and was for the use of purchasing a replacement laptop. The other was for about £360.00 and was for the purchase of a new cover plan. I went down to Dixon’s in the town centre and explained what had gone on. Bearing in mind that my original laptop cost me £1399.99 and the cover plan cost me £500.00 I felt a little short changed. I asked the guy for the laptop I now have but there was a price difference. If I wanted this one, then I’d have to have the display model but the gentleman was unwilling to reduce the price because of this fact. I talked him through the last three months’ activities and how people had been obstructive and rude to me while I was in a delicate state, being sans laptop. We came to an agreement and I paid some extra for the laptop.

It’s a Packard Bell (my old one was hp) and it is literally twice as powerful. Furthermore, it’s got a read/write DVD drive so I’ll be having great fun with that, I’ll have you know.

I told the manager-guy, that I didn’t want another cover plan and he said that since I can’t use the voucher for anything else, I might as well just get three years as it’ll be free. I considered and decided to go with it. I can’t really be sure if I’ll ever use it, mind you. Just two simple faults that developed with the machine and it takes three months to resolve? Is that, or is that not absolutely ridiculous by anyone’s standards.

”Could you process this one for me, Kaz?” The guy asked a store assistant, “he’s had a bit of trouble with Mastercare.”
“Oh no,” said Kaz, who I recognised from school. I think he was in the year above me.
“Yeah,” said the manager, “a bit of a special.” He seemed to be pretty empathetic about the whole situation, but then I don’t know what they might have said after I left. Anyway, I was told to come back in an hour so that they could clean the machine of that frustrating Dixons display program that goes on about how damned good they are. I went back, collected it and took a taxi home.

I was impressed with it, there didn’t seem anything wrong with it at all. I had some concerns about the mouse because it went all squiffy but I cleaned it and all was well. I’ve reinstalled my programs and have settled in nicely. I am totally dissatisfied with all that went on in the obtaining of my new laptop but at least it’s here and maybe I can forget about the whole dastardly affair. …no chance.

What a mess! (Not the op but Master .....) Is there anywhere you can buy computers/electronic goods and be sure of being looked after if something goes wrong?
