Hawk's Pro Skater. The modes, menu and trick system are identical. The main difference is that instead of skating around, performing tricks and collecting videotapes, you're riding a bike, performing tricks and collecting magazine covers. To accommodate the physics of bicycle tricks, the level design is different fromTHPS. Some of the levels are good, but most are relatively bland and aren't as clever as what we've seen before. Despite this flaw, it is the best BMX game currently on the market, but in the context of other extreme sports games it falls short. It's too similar to the originalTHPSand not as good asTHPS2.Despite the fact that it's mostly derivative, the game has a few outstanding features. It contains lots of full-motion video sequences, albeit at the expense of load times. The real gem is the soundtrack, which is a nice mix of punk, electronica, hip-hop and rock. It's definitely one of the best video game soundtracks ever.If you're looking for the best BMX game on the PC, this is it. If you're a fan of extreme sports in general, you'd be better served withTHPS2or waiting forTHPS3. --Raymond M Padilla, Amazon.com

for the road trip inMat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2. You'll join 11 other riders on a tricked-out tear across the US from Oklahoma City to Hawaii. Before you can hang with the likes of Mat "The Condor" Hoffman or Ruben "Pollo" Alcantara, it's advisable to practise your chops on the free ride or session modes, especially if you're a newcomer to tricks-based sport games. It can take a good while on Free Ride's open-ended play time to achieve mastery of the complicated sets of controller taps needed to win trick points.Level access in session or free ride modes depends on what you've unlocked in the road trip phase. To get to the next destination, you'll need to complete a set of four challenges not once but three times (once each in rookie, semi-pro and pro modes). That can be a daunting challenge, especially for beginners. More experienced players may find the search for the final trick that will push them to the next level a little tedious. That said, it's not hard to find a satisfying BMX groove and zoom along on your road trip. The game also includes several multiplayer options, including HORSE, Tag, Halfpipe Hell, Graffiti War and Push , where you try to out-trick your opponent and make his side of the screen smaller by increasing your side of the screen. Graphically, the game detail is pretty awesome--from the bikes and riders to the glitzy lights of the Las Vegas background. The game is also populated with some fine tunes, ranging from LL Cool J to Iggy Pop. --Agen Schmitz

Mat Hoffman Pro BMX is the latest biking game to grace the PS1, and it does so in style. Activision have done themselves justice with this amazing game, and from the opening video sequence, you will notice the close resemblance to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Similarities are noticeable immediately. Like THPS, Hoffman plays like a dream, and the graphics are amazing. If we had to find a new THPS, this would undoubtedly be it, hands down.
The first mode you will encounter is Career Mode. You are to choose from a vast selection of the most respected bikers, including Mat Hoffman, Mike Escamilla and many more. You can then browse the currently very small collection of bikes and calibrate it to your preference, with very miniscule details such as the tires and the handlebars, which albeit unnecessary, are still very interesting. However, should you get involved in Career Mode, you will soon build up a decent amount of special bikes and characters, which will make your job immensely easier. After being treated to a nice movie, you will get out into the action, where you have two minutes to complete a variety of tasks. These tasks earn you covers, which are used to advance to the next level. Career Mode is thoroughly entertaining, and it has a great learning curve, which really helps you to get to grips with the world of Mat Hoffman. After 10 minutes of casual play, you will be pulling off 10,000 point grinds, and 1080 Superman's.
The multiplayer counterpart offers something incredibly different. You will be introduced to Graffiti Mode, where (in a split-screen) you have to pull off tricks over various parts of the level, and as you do, these parts will become highlighted in your color (either red or blue). However, the opponent can steam them from you with a more desirable trick, and vice versa. The winner is the player with the most parts in two minutes. Trick Attack mode is again split-screen, but the player with the highest score after two minutes wins. Finally, Horse Mode is a glorified "can-you-top-this" contest. After entering a word of your choice, you will take it in turns of performing tricks. The player with the least points at the end of each round gets a letter from the word chosen at the start. The games ends when one person has the entire word by their name. This is the most obscure multiplayer mode I've ever seen, but it really makes this game what it is. Sure, it would still be a classic without it, but this really makes it greater than great.
We then change to some more laid back modes, with Single Session, where you can practice your speed, attempting to attain the most points possible in two minutes. Free Ride allows you to practice your tricks under no time restrictions - this is particularly helpful for beginners. There is a movie theatre, where you can view all the video sequences that you've seen so far. Finally, there is a Park Editor, where you can create your own wacky and wonderful tracks. It's best to really try out Single Session and Free Skate early on, or you'll really not see any use for it, as the Career Mode itself is enough practice. I found the Park Editor to be of reasonable quality, if not a little somewhat repetitive and frustrating.
Mat Hoffman Pro BMX is without a doubt a PS1 classic. The controls are intuitive, the graphics are brilliant and the realism is there. Also backed by a musical score from such groups as Outkast, you simply have to buy this. It's jam packed full of features, has a great learning curve and it can measure up to the greats - a true testament to how amazing this is. I strongly suggest buying Mat Hoffman Pro BMX, and for the stunning price of £19.99, why not?
Advantages: brilliant gameplay and the great graphics Disadvantages: none
...hit me when I played Mat Hoffmans Pro BMX is the incredible similarity to both Tony Hawks and Tony Hawks 2. Is this a bad thing? HELL NO! Tony Hawks 1 and 2 are two of the best games I’ve played on any console. I may be a dedicated Ninty but that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy great games on other platforms. MHP BMX is in fact made by the same people who made Tony Hawks. The same engine is used and the game plays almost exactly ... ...those very reasons I just gave! A game that more than closely resembles Tony Hawks can’t be bad! Can it?!
I picked up the controls amazingly easily. They are just so simple. It’s this kind of simplicity that is missing from games today but thankfully MHP BMX has simplicity in abundance.
You can choose from a number of different modes. My favourite has to be Free Ride. You’re just shoved into a Bike park and you can do what the ...

Advantages: same simple controls as Tony Hawks Disadvantages: A cheap cash in on Tony Hawks
Mat Hoffman’s BMX was delayed for over six months when it was set to be released, with many rumours of a lacklustre game. So, what exactly does the long awaited relative to the immensely popular Tony Hawks games have in store for us?
In my opinion, it doesn’t really offer much at all. If, like me, you were expecting something special, then prepare to be disappointed. This game had the potential to be good. Two previous games from the ... ...Tony Hawks engine, and has Mat Hoffman’s mug plastered all over it. Everything was looking promising for the BMX version of the best extreme sports game ever and every skaters dream.
Somehow, though, it went wrong. Personally, I think it went horribly wrong.
When playing Mat Hoffman’s, it seems quite hard to realise that this game was released a good eight months after THPS2. Many people, including myself, will have played the demo ...

...the eight characters there including Mat Hoffman and other famous BMXers, or as I'm told cause I have no clue who the heck any of them are! The graphics arent very good but dont let that put you off. What it lacks in graphics it makes up in gameplay and everything else. The music is a lot similar to Tony Hawks 2, with a few of the same tracks placed in.
The tricks look really good with my favourite being the superman where you hold onto the handle ... ...special I think are better on this game than on Tony Hawks with the backflip no footer and no handed superman?!?! There are 6 levels on the game and 2 competition including the construction yard, the park (NYC) and the london underground. Also included like Tony Hawks 2 is the 3D real-time park editor where you can make your favourite park that you've dreamed about riding your bike. The controls are easy to use but very hard to master. This game ...

...playing on a demo of mat hoffmans this review may be a bit sketchy. Mat Hoffmans is no were near a great game. It's enjoyable. Yet the ease of pulling of tricks like a '900 backfilp' and a 'toothpick grind tono hander to icepick grind to no footer to double peg grind to nothing plus bigrail (on a rather smaal pointless rail)' just brings the whole levle of gameplay down. Yeah it's great if you want a muck about with your mates but for a bmx sim it's ...

Review of Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX (PlayStation)
Advantages: Great Graphics, Cool Tricks + Addictive Disadvantages: A little repetative
Mat Hoffman pro BMX has got to be one of my favourite games that’s out there today. Anyone who has played Tony Hawks Pro Skateboarding in the past will know that the graphics are immense, the same engine and park styles are used in Mat Hoffman. All that has been done is that a new character and equipment replaces the skateboarder and his board.
The game also has new tricks relevant to Matt Hoffman such as superman and the basic bunnyhop, the ... ...types are almost identical. Ramps and features of levels are the same other than a few additions that wouldn’t be used if you were on a BMX.
The game has the option to follow a career which has to be the best mode, you meet objectives in levels to earn magazine covers which allow you to unlock new levels and equipment when so many are collected. As you can see in the title, the guys on this do look a little invincible when you try a ‘720 ...

Longer than the average action/adventure with twenty big mission, great level-design, clever scenarios and mission objectives, fine controls, lots of unlockable extras
Very difficult to get into, can frustrate at times, stealth sections aren't as succesful as the shooting ones, still features 'square-headed' characters (*)
