A bit of background on Matalan!
Matalan was founded in 1985 by John Hargreaves and currently boasts over 200 stores and the 200th opened in September 06. So I'm guessing there's well over 200 stores now eh lolThere own range is called Papaya but are also known for stocking Lee's, Brookers and Easy jeans in a variety of sizes and lengths and most sizes go from size 8-20 in ladies clothing but in my store the jeans that are not their own range (Papaya) only got to a 16.
I'm not going to review men's clothing , as a single girl I have not much clue bout the men's or kids stuff but I can say my local store has a small children's department and quite a selection of men's stuff and it all looks ok quality.
So my store, its not massive as I said, but it is well laid out and organised and all on one level and got nice big aisles so you don't feel crammed in.
There are no windows which makes me feel really claustrophobic though and in the winter the heating is turned up so high it is stiflingly hot so you cant hang about. The queues are huge and not even at Xmas time are the tills fully manned and I've never seen more than one person on the customer service desk no matter how long the queue is.
There are never any staff about to help and if you ask them a question they don't seem to be very knowledgeable at all.I constantly get advertising leaflets through my door and I have to be very fair about it I've been over to look at this stuff and they do have it in stock unlike other shops which is a pleasant change!
The fashion of the store is surprisingly good.Lots of changing rooms, just enough room to manage in , nothing spectacular but they do the job!
The shoes are great value and again lots of different styles and some in half sizes and they tend to sell a lot of matching bags which is nice. The jewellery is by Madison and again looks nice and is something I always look at they do a lot of mix and match and lots of little sets and not bad prices and often do deals IE buy one get one free and lots I've bought lately was a pound a piece!
Matalan does stock some branded perfumes but they're all behind the tills and there are no testers. They're not the biggest of brands but bottles around ten pound so unless you know the fragrance then your taking a risk!Remember your Matalan store card or they have to faff about at customer services with your postcode for ages and you hold the queue up big time!
14 day return policy. All in all a really reasonable shop with a good selection of merchandise, though I think its mainly aimed at the over 30s and who prefer classic clothing to anything fashionable.
