This product promised something wonderful - skin, covered in foundation, that looked not much different to your own in colour. I assumed, therefore, that the improvement it would make to my skin, would be to even it out and make it flawless, without a thick cake base of orange which I hope most of us try to avoid. I was wrong.
Embarking on a trip to Boots, as my normal choice: Max Factor "Lasting Performance" foundation, was nearing the end of its life, I was struck by a display of this new foundation. Before this I had seen the television advertisements with a wonderful model with wonderful glowing, flawless naked-looking skin. 'Perfect!', I thought, and siezed the bottle and free watch from the stand. The price was a little surprising since it was a little more expensive than my usual foundation for 34ml instead of 35ml. 'But this will make me look better', I convinced myself.
The packaging looks cheap. Ironic, since the product was not priced so. A navy, white and gold sticker encircles a pump-container but it does not seem to ooze the same class as other Max Factor products, and on closer inspection it seems that the gold is a different shade - perhaps it is this which makes it tackier. But at the end of the day, we're talking about packaging. Sure, it'd be nice if the packaging reflected the fact it cost almost £12, but what it really comes down to, is the product.
I could actually feel the difference in texture when I circled my finger around in a small amount of foundation which was pumped out onto my palm. It feels a lot less smooth - more bitty almost - it is not a "joined" texture, and with my incredible lack of scientific knowledge I decided that this must be what makes the foundation allow your true colours to show through. It's not solid.
The main problem, however, may well have been my skin. My skin is patchy in colour and I do have spots. It is both dry and oily. So the foundation, turned out to be a disaster. I'm sure that if you have a wonderful colouring on your face, then this foundation may work wonders, but as it is, I was unhappy with the result.
It gave me quite a washed out look, with my patchy colour showing through. The cover-up ranged from almost-average to non-existant and I especially had trouble with the under eye area, sometimes having to apply three layers before it matched the other colouring on my face. I personally prefer to not use concealer, and therefore look for a foundation which can do this as well. With this foundation, I did not find that at all.
I have worn the foundation after the recent sun we have had, which meant that my face had become more tanned. It worked better when I did not use it as an all-over foundation, and just used it for small areas which did not tan as well. In this way, I could use it to create a more even skin. Therefore I think it may be better to own this as a supplementary foundation, rather than a primary-use one.
The foundation doesn't last too long if you're a face-toucher, or if you do anything active! But with its light texture, that is not unexpected. Obviously, it is therefore very easy to remove, that is, if there's any left on your face at the end of the day!
Overall I was disappointed with the packaging which looked cheap and the product which wasn't cheap! It did adapt to my skin tone, but Max Factor didn't tell me that that would be a good thing! This foundation does have a use - the summer would be a perfect time to use it, since it is very light in texture and can be used to even out tanned skin.
