Well it’s getting to that time of year where I start to panic about what goodies to buy all my friends and family for Christmas, so I thought to myself last weekend that I would nip to Boots and have a look at the range of gifts, and what a good job I did, for it was there in the Chester branch that I fell in love….
Yes, I fell head over heals in love with the most beautiful, nay exquisite, eye shadow I have ever seen.
Basically I was walking in the door, when I stumbled upon a herd of people trying to get through the store, so rather than joining in the pushing and shoving, I decided to check out my surroundings, which just so happened to be the Max Factor make up stand, and there it was, just calling to me….Number 103 Barley Fields in the Earth Spirits range of eye shadows. It is a pretty bright golden yellow, but not too garish, I might hasten to add.
I quickly picked up the tester pot and tried a little bit on the back of my hand. I was a little nervous that it would be too bright for my taste, but I was wrong – it was a lovely shade of gold with a generous hint of sparkle in it – perfect for this time of year.
After picking up a few more bits and pieces from around the store, I made my way to the till and realised that I hadn’t even checked the price was of the eye shadow, but there again I don’t think it would have mattered how much it cost – I just had to have it.
Well I checked my receipt as I was leaving the store and found that it only cost £4.45, which is a pretty reasonable price for a single eye shadow nowadays. The other thing I didn’t do, which I will admit is unusual for me is, I didn’t check out the full range of colours – I just saw the one I wanted and that was it, however, I have checked on the Max Factor website and they do seem to have around about 20 shades, ranging from pink, to lilac, to bronze, so I’m sure that there would be a shade for almost everyone.
Now the packaging in my opinion is ok, but it’s nowhere near as jazzy as say the Estee Lauder eye shadows, but there again you’re not paying anywhere near the same price for it (Estee Lauder is roughly £14.00 for a single eye shadow!)
However despite it’s plainness, it is quite practical packaging. The eye shadow itself is tightly compacted into a neat round pot (not like some of the loose eye shadows you can get that seem to go everywhere when I open them!). The base of the pot is dark blue with a clear plastic lid that has a gold MF in the centre of it. The lid unscrews easily but is secure.
The only down side is that there is no applicator provided, whether this is down to the fact that the packaging doesn’t allow for one (mind you, Bourjois got around that one by putting a small applicator in the base of their eye shadow pots) or that they are keeping costs down, I honestly can’t say. To be fair though, I never ever use any of the applicators I get included, I prefer to use my make up brushes instead.
So what’s it like then? Well it is advertised as being “light and silky” and I must say that I do agree, and can’t think of a better way to describe it. The texture of the powder is very soft and fine, and even though it is sparkly, you can’t feel any ‘graininess’, which would possibly irritate your eyes.
The colour does go on very faintly, but as with all make up, the trick is to build it up to the right depth of colour you desire. I feel that it goes on really well compared to some other brands that I have tried which tend to flake and fall under my eyes and down my cheeks. I do use it with another colour eye shadow (Boots No 7 range) and find that it blends extremely well and doesn’t ‘crease’.
Now, I do love my make up, partially due to the fact that as an ex hairdresser and beauty therapist, image is important, but, I’m not one for having to be in the mirror all day touching up everything – no, I like to put my make up on in the morning, and do as little as possible to it until it’s time to take it off in the evening, and I can honestly say that this eye shadow does stand the test of time – it goes on well and looks just as good at the end of the day as it did when it was first applied, and by the way, it’s easy to remove – I just use my all over facial wipe – no need to use a separate eye make remover if you don’t want to.
So, my overall opinion is that this eye shadow is well priced, has a lovely depth of colour and lasts all day, with no need to reapply. Yes I would recommend it and yes I’ll definitely be buying more of it.
Advantages: Great coverage. stays on all day, pot will last ages, Good value for money! Disadvantages: None! It's one of my favourite eye shadows!
...smooth.

Advantages: Small enough to pop in your handbag for that necessary re-application Disadvantages: didn't last, not very good value for money
...eyeshadows I already have by Max Factor.
I was very disappointed with the product. It was a small round tub with eye shadow in it, no applicator was provided.
I applied the eyeshadow and was not very impressed with it, I could hardly see the colour and it was supposed to be quite a dark heather colour.
Within a couple of hours I checked my make up, as we women do, and saw that it had not lasted at all, it had worn off and I was left with the frosted ... ...I was very disappointed as I did expect a Max Factor product to last as the other products I buy from them have done.
It seems that if you want to throw your money away on eyeshadows that just wear off almost instantly, then buy these from Max factor. ...

...this range of eyeshadow by Max Factor. This product caught my eye because the Max Factor brand is well known for good quality and yet the eyeshadow cost less than a fiver (£4.45). I chose the 'burnt bark' colour which is a shiny mid-brown colour.

The packaging is very small and simple making it ideal to slip into your handbag ... ...seem to last a long time. I use mine nearly everyday but still have loads left after a couple of months. The logo did fade off the top of the lid after a short while however and the tub looks a bit scratched and grubby. The eyeshadow does not come with an applicator brush or a mirror which is the only set back, however as I have plenty of brushes already this did not matter to me. *The Product*
I found this eyeshadow to be fantastic, it goes on ...
