I have had a standalone DVD recorder for several years, during this time I have used hundreds of different brands from budget to the top of the range. Over the years one brand has remained consistently used by myself and that is Maxell.
Although over the years the format has changed the disc has remained the same. The disc is multi-speed from the standard 1x burning (for use with standalone players) up to 8X (ideal for use with a PC). The DVDR'S come in the - format which is the far more popular format, and far more accepted.
There is no denying that Maxell is a budget to mid price range product, but unlike others similar brands the images stored on the discs do not dilute or weaken with time, I have 5 year old discs that have not become dodgy over time. But in the similar amount of time I have had Ritek, Bulkpaq, and even Sony discs that have experienced difficulties. The most common deterioration problem is that you get a percentage of the way through the disc and suddenly the image freezes. I have never had one Maxell disc that has let me down, and as a result they are my one and only choice.
Its pointless me discussing burn too times on a computer, because this varies from one PC to another depending on the type of recorder, the available space on your hard drive, and what else your PC is doing. But as a guide I have a Sony Vaio M1 PC which comes with all standard Sony components; I can record a full 4.7GB of data to a disc in about 20 minutes. I have copied certain DVDS which take 7-14 minutes to copy video content across.
Standalone DVD recorders obviously record in real time. Worth pointing out is that DVD discs that are used over a period of weeks often get a bit temperamental; this is down to the disc not the recorder despite what others may think. I over several years have recorded TV programmes over a series of weeks and Maxell discs have become less temperamental than others. If they do become a little shall we say "awkward" I find that burning to the disc for a period of 30 seconds then erasing that portion, this seems to rectify the issue.
You can record between 1-10 hours of video imaging to a disc depending on the method of recorder and software used if appropriate. The general use length is 1-6 hours of video if used on a standalone recorder.
Maxell discs of this standard are available in a variety of standards Individually in cases, sets of five in cases, or spindles of 10-100. I am as shown by the heading reviewing a 50 spindle format; this I find is best purchased from Play.Com for £12.99 each spindle, but if you buy two you get a third spindle free making the DVD's around £8.50 a spindle.
I hope I have made this review relatively straightforward but appreciate that those yet to venture into recording to DVD may be a little confused.
