The cases of the CD's have lots of small writing on the front, it doesn't look very attractive but I guess they thing people will ... ...have the same design as the box on. Each of the cases are shrink-wrapped, with the easy access tear things that make opening them really easy.

So about 2 years ago I popped into the local Asda, and saw these reduced to £1, so I thought I would get them as you can't go wrong for £1. And I didn't go wrong, they are really good. Now I buy them quite regularly. I mainly use CD-R's for music, and these give really good sound quality on my cd player.
Reliability... I have had lots of CD-R discs that have come up with errors such as 'Disk Error' and others during the burning process, but the times that I have used these (which is a lot), what I can remember I haven't had that happen once. With a 48x speed the process is really quick, even burning a CD with the full 80 minutes taken up.
Use… I use CD-R's mainly for music CDs and VCDs but you can use it for all sorts, e.g. Data, Photos, Copying Games (although that's illegal). These can only be used once, which means you can't 'go over' the information to use again. If you want to use discs multiple times then you need CD-RW discs which allow this. However, with CD-RW's, lots of older CD players, and lots of new ones don't support the playback of them, so that's why I find CD-R's better for audio CD's.
Packaging… As you can see from the picture, the box that they come in is a red swirl on the left with a blue section on the right. Durability… I am the messiest person around! I all of my CD's are out of their cases on my desk. There are loads of these as I look around while I write this, and they are all still in great condition. If they can stand being chucked around by me then they can stand it from anyone. None of the cases have cracked or been damaged, but they are standard cases so really it's if you look after them or not that counts.
Capacity… For data these discs hold up to 700mb which is the standard really, but nevertheless it's still quite a lot of data. For an audio cd, these hold 80 minutes, which on average is around 20-25 songs, if the songs are 4-5 minutes like the average song.
Because I only paid a pound for them the first time I bought them, unfortunately they don't stay at this price. The other couple of times that I have bought them I have paid £3.99 for them, so I guess they would be around this price from most stores.
So, in conclusion I say these are really good CD-R's, and well worth the £3.99 price tag. If you are looking for good quality, but don't want to splash out then these are definitely for you.

...I can print onto, but Maxell doesn't seem to offer these. I don't always want printable ones though, so find myself using these for general everyday backup use.
I don't always need the protective cases either so this time I've gone for a 25 cakebox pack, primarily to archive the huge amount of photographs sitting on the two hard disks inside the PC. The good thing about cakeboxes is that you don't have to peel off celephane wrappings off the disks ... ...silver in colour, with the Maxell logo, CD-R 80XL and 48x logo. The surface seems to accept any standard permanent marker pen, which stays put.
I was perhaps one of the first people to ever have a CD-Writer, when they first came out, and have gone through a fair amount of media during that time. I've always had mixed results, but usually a few percent of disks fail, and you expect that. So far, though these Maxell disks have been 100% reliable during ...
