Maxell DLT 10 GB

Advantages: Fast, reliable, Good Price
Disadvantages: No SCSI cable included, Not Great instructions

...I bought this for our office server which before-hand was running a DDS5 tape drive. I have to say the DDS5 backup system we had was excellent and never caused me any problems. We got to a point where we needed two tapes to do a backup, and considering we keep backups for up to a month, thats a hell of a lot more tapes we would have to buy. After a lot of research and learning about DLT and SDLT, we discovered the V160. DLT allows backups to 40GB (80GB Compressed) and SDLT is alot more (i forget the figures). DLT would not have been enough and SDLT is a hell of a lot more expensive. Quantums V160 is right in the middle of the two and each tape can store up to 160GB data if compressed. Advantages: I find Maxell to be a reliable DVDR producer
Disadvantages: None as yet

...that have experienced difficulties. The most common deterioration problem is that you get a percentage of the way through the disc and suddenly the image freezes. I have never had one Maxell disc that has let me down, and as a result they are my one and only choice. Its pointless me discussing burn too times on a computer, because this varies from one PC to another depending on the type of recorder, the available space on your hard drive, and what else your PC is doing. But as a guide I have a Sony Vaio M1 PC which comes with all standard Sony components; I can record a full 4.7GB of data to a disc in about 20 minutes. I have copied certain DVDS which take 7-14 minutes to copy video content across. Standalone DVD recorders obviously record in real time.
