The capacities of today's desktop and network server hard drives continue to expand. This data is only as secure as the integrity of the backups and archives you keep. Maxell DAT 72 cartridges deliver the reliability, outstanding cost performance and compact convenience required to allow these backups to be made safely, reliably and economically. Maxell's patented ceramic coating process acts as protective armor for the fine metal particles in the magnetic layer of the tape to guard against heat, humidity, abrasion and oxidation. The process is skillfully engineered to achieve the high output, high S/N ratio and low error rate necessary to ensure reliable data storage across a wide range applications. Maxell DAT 72 tapes employ an ultra thin magnetic layer technology that provides a magnetic coating layer of sub-micron proportions. Maxell combines specialized calendaring techniques, which maintain proper particle alignment, with superior tape tensioning designed to ensure the tape always maintains optimum contact with the drive's heads. Maxell utilizes exclusive technologies to form a smooth running surface and realize high output and stable signal characteristics. Maxell's advanced cartridge design features a virtually dust-proof anti-static shell that prevents invasion by foreign particles, effectively ensuring recording integrity and tape longevity. Other features that also contribute to effective and reliable data storage include the single-mold vibration-resistant half, reinforced slip sheet and metal spring in the slider lock. All Maxell DAT 72 tapes are fitted with Maxell's own Safe-T-Hublock hub locking mechanism to ensure proper tape tension and prevent mis-threading during initial loading.
Advantages: Small, lightweight, efficient, reliable. does what it says Disadvantages: Tape, small capacity, price, slow, storage/usage issues
...The Sony DGD120P is the second incarnation of the DDS tape format used for computer backup in the 1990s. Back in the days when company data took up a few gigabytes of disk space, the DDS2 cartridge provided a relatively cheap and efficient way to backup and restore data easily.
~~~ Appearance ~~~
Looking not unlike a modern Mini-DV casette, the DGD120P measures 72mm x 52mm x 10mm in black plastic with a small window showing the tape spooled inside. Unlike a video casette, the tape contained within cannot be easily accessed by prying fingers and the wheels used for spooling the tape are inaccessible until the cartridge is inserted into a drive. On the spine of the cartridge is a small white switch allowing the user to write-protect the tape and preserve a copy of the data contained thereupon.
Each cartridge is also supplied...
Advantages: Up and running in under a minute Disadvantages: Not the fastest, (but then what do you expect)
...a simple to use backup solution, but it also features HPs unique "One Button Disaster Recovery" or OBDR. As the name suggests, if you loose you system (disk crash etc) you can recover the whole thing from tape by pressing just one button. How does it work? You simply load the back up tape in to the drive, power off the system, press the eject button on the tape drive and power everything up, this put's the tape drive into it's OBDR mode and the system sees it as a bootable device and boots from the tape, this then triggers the full system recovery... and guess what? It works! much quicker and easier than rebuilding from scratch.
Advantages: VERY FAST Disadvantages: EXPENSE AND NOISE
...aspects such as capacity. The 36GB drive is not what you would call big, but the speed somewhat makes up a little for that.
With the main pro being speed the specs speak for themselves:
Buffer Size 8 MB
Average Latency 2.99 ms (nominal)
Contact Start/Stop Cycles 20,000 minimum
Seek Times (Average)
Read Seek Time (Average) 4.5 ms
Write Seek Time (Average) 5.9 ms (average)
Track-To-Track Seek Time 0.6 ms (average)
Full Stroke Seek 10.2 ms (average)
Transfer Rates
Buffer To Host (Serial ATA) 150 MB/s (Max)
Buffer To Disk 72 MB/s (Sustained
If you have money to waste then think about buying the Raptors, otherwise with newer and the faster SATA 2 out now the coice is yours....
