"Scooting in style"

My son turned four years old recently and one of his main presents was a Maxi Micro Scooter. Although he is technically below the recommended lower age for one of these scooter, he is very tall for his age (in 5-6 years clothing) so he had already outgrown the scooter that was more 'suitable' for his age. He received this from his grandparents but I purchased it for him and it cost around £90.

Anyone one with a child of preschool or primary school age will. most likely, have come across the Micro scooter brand - it seems the brand of choice for young children. There is a mini micro which is for children aged 3-5 years and this maxi micro which is recommended for children aged 6-12 years. The Maxi is a three wheeled scooter (two at the front and one at the rear) and the handle bar is extendable so it can be adjusted to suit the child's height - and grow with your child.

The Maxi is available in a variety of colours, to suit girls/boys or unisex. We purchased in a deep blue and black. The footplate is a thick blue plastic, the handles are a texured blue rubber and the wheels and metal pole are black. Wheels are made of a thick plastic and the black pole has the 'micro' product label on in a deep blue. Where the pole can be extended to raise the handles, the pole becomes silver in colour.

The scooter was received in a box with detailed instructions - and tools provided - for it's assembly. Assemble was quick and easy and instructions were very clear and simple to follow. I would say that assembly took around 15 minutes. We also accessorised it with items from their range - a bell and wheel whizzers - to make it more personalised for him.

My son instantly loved the scooter and couldn't wait to ride it. It was a great size for him (with the handles as low as they go). The footplate is a nice size in terms of both length and width and he can stand on this comfortably. The scooter is lightweight and easy for him to control and lift but is feels heavy enough to offer durability and resilience at the same time. The positioning of the wheels makes it very stable and easy for him to balance on - it gives him the confidence to use it freely.

The textured rubber handles are comfortable to hold in his hands and are easy for him to grip. They assist him with the steering - which he finds relatively easy. There is a 'tilt and turn' mechanism which he is having difficulty mastering but, in the mean time, it is light enough for him to lift and turn as he wishes. The wheels turn freely and allow the scooter to gather quite a bit of speed. It moves smoothly and evenly and copes well with most surfaces - bumps and dips do not prove too much of a problem. There is a brake at the rear wheel which is easy to operate but my son will usually just stop the scooter by placing his foot on the ground so this doesn't get too much use!

From use so far, there is relatively little wear and tear. The wheels are a little scratched and marked but that is really all the evidence that it is used that there is. The pain is not scratched or chipped and the footplate is in good condition too.

The scooter is quite highly priced - usually in excess of £100. This is actually more than we paid for my son's bike, which is surprising. I think that the price is justified by the sheer quality of the scooter over so many of it's competitors. I fully expect this scooter to last my son until he outgrows it - which should be a number of years. If looked at in that way, it does seem good value for money as my son uses his several times a week.

The scooter looks good and it is nice that accessories can be bought to personalise it too. It is easy to use, lightweight enough to carry when not in use and durable enough to withstand knocks and bumps with no real damage. The model is available in a variety of colours too so there is definitely something for everyone in the range.

Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase. It is quite a large initial outlay but, hopefully, it is a longterm investment too. The quality is that good that I am hopeful of it not only lasting my son a good few years but it still being in a good condition so it can be passed on to his younger brother too. Most importantly, my son loves it and wants to use it all the time. It is easy for him to use and fun too - so offers a good opportunity for fresh air and exercise. Highly recommended.
