Manufacturer's product description
The Maxtor Atlas 15K SCSI drive is the fastest hard drive in the world. Its 3.2ms seek time enables 45% more I/Os per second than 10K RPM drives can achieve. The Atlas 15K drive can sustain up to 75MB/sec data transfer rate and is ideal for use in high-performance workstations, NAS and SAN environments, OLTP applications, enterprise servers and data mining applications. The drive is equipped with Maxtor-developed Ultra320 SCSI and is backwards compatible with all prior versions of SCSI. The Ultra320 interface includes MaxAdapt, a closed-loop method of improving signal quality by amplifying the fundamental frequency of the signal in the receiver while filtering noise and other undesirable components. MaxAdapt allows the drive to adapt to changing system conditions and components, which translates into lower error rates, easier integration, and increased bus efficiency for optimal system performance.

...One of the most unreliable and fault ridden disks I've ever seen. I purchased a batch of similarly sized Maxtors, Hitachis, Seagates and Western Digital drives around 3 years ago. I had about 15Maxtors, of which I now have 7 remaining. In comparison, I've only lost 1 Hitachi and 2 Seagates. I'd say that pretty much speaks for itself.
To top it off, whilst the Seagates came with 3 year return to base warranties, the Maxtors have about a 1 year. I wouldn't say that's a vote of confidence from the manufacturer on the product's reliability. Though, 1 year warranty on hard disks does seem to be becoming industry standard.
For disk purchases I would highly recommend Western Digital or Seagate. I still have 4 GB WD Caviars that are still up and running!...

(this is a good indication of how the drive will work on a normal desktop). The higher the score the better
CPU utilisation for the Maxtor is relatively high, but still within adequate levels at 3% on a Athlon 2800+ with KT400 board.
Admittedly these are not that comprehensive tests, but it certainly shows that for general use the Maxtor drive will lose out very little against the SCSI drive unless in write operations - and even then the price difference for so much extra space is minimal. It might not be able to work as well as a web...

Advantages: Very capacious, Good qaulity, Good value for money Disadvantages: Not supported properly by most operating systems
...I wanted to buy a Hard Drive that I could trust all my files with. I have had an External Maxtor Hard Drive for a while and I can admit it's taken some abuse, but it still works fine! So I decided to go for Maxtor's 200Gb drive, the DiamondMax Plus 9.
I baught the OEM version, it was extremely good value for money, I got it for around £90! But the OEM version comes with no software and little did I realise that such a big drive needed to be specially activated first.
I must have spent half an hour tinkering with it un til I took a trip to Maxtor's website and found some software that would set it up for me. And the software worked a treat, except for 1 snag. My ATA drivers couldn't support 200GB and the drive had to be formated to 130GB instead, thats 70GB of valuable space down the pan!! And I am using Windows XP Pro which is one...

The Personal Storage line of external hard drives comes from Maxtor, who were acquired by Seagate last year. As a subsidiary of Seagate, Maxtor is currently the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. What does this mean to the consumer? It... more
Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer... more
Well what can i say. I chose maxtor because i thought it was a good named brand and would be reliable. Plus the fact they have been taken over by seagate who have been in the hard drive business forever. With these two factors you would think this would... more
