Manufacturer's product description
The Atlas 15K II SCSI hard drive offers an unbeatable combination of reliability, adaptability and leading-edge performance to satisfy the demands of I/O-intensive, high-bandwidth enterprise applications. It's ideal for OLTP, SAN and NAS environments, high-performance workstations, 3-D animation, scientific data processing, economic modeling, data mining, audio/video and digital imaging. The drive delivers seek times as fast as 3.0ms and data transfer rates up to 98MB/sec. At the same time, solid design and state-of-the-art manufacturing test processes make possible a MTTF of 1.4 million high-duty-cycle hours. Reliability is further enhanced by improved S.M.A.R.T. and self-diagnostics. Maxtor's intelligent drive technology, MaxAdapt lets the HDD adapt to the designs of individual systems, resulting in seamless integration and optimal performance.

...This drive is perfect for backing up. Be it;
*movies
*Pictures
*music
*software
It's simply a case of plugging it in and sitting back, it's plug 'n' play, so as soon as you plug it in, Windows will go through it's usual stages when installing new hardware and like magic, you now have a 100GB externel harddrive.
It's extremely quiet and fast, which is what you would like when backing up. it also has a 7200 RPM, 8MB cache buffer, it's USB 2.0 and 1.1 compatible (upto 480 Mb/sec, Windows and Mac Os) plus a Maxtor DriveLock to protect from unauthorized use.
If you want an easy to install external harddrive with no cons, install wizard, plus a little extra, then this would be for you....

Advantages: Fast, quiet, Plug and Play Disadvantages: Supplied 'back-up' software could be better.
...can be pressed on the front of the drive and it automatically backs-up to your requirements - install the provided software to use this feature.
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
300GB is loads of space to kick around in and some might say overkill. However, in these times of digital photography, home movies, music and software downloads, I'd disagree. Memories can't be replaced and (in my opinion) digital memories are more vulnerable. An extra copy in addition to the 'in use' CD/DVD makes sense, wherever you store it.
THE SPEC
The nittiy gritty specs are incomprehensible to me, but if you understand them they are available from any online retailer selling this drive. I think it's easier to say, in common terms, that I copied 200MB in 30 seconds and 2GB in less than five minutes using my Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz.. This is much, much faster than...

Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer... more
