I had previously owned other previous external hard drives, however my previous one which was 250gb, was getting a bit cramped so I decided to make the leap to an external with 1 terabyte of space. I put my faith in the Maxtor Basics 1TB and I was not disappointed.

Capacity

Having 1 TB of space means that most will struggle to fill it, even after having it for three months and constantly putting large video files and music albums onto it I have yet to fill a third of it. My average music album is 50MB, so therefore on the Maxtor 1 TB I could fit…20,000 albums on the hard drive, which is an incredible amount. Whilst I am sure there are people who will fill this space, even my excessive video and music collection is nowhere near filling the Maxtor and most users will never fill the terabyte of space.

Reliability

Design

The Maxtor 1 TB has a matt black finish all around its curved body with a shiny black top and bottom. It has a green LED light that lights up when information is being accessed or modified. One nice feature is that it can be placed either stood up on its side or lying down. It runs perfectly either way though it feels sturdier when on its side. When data is being accessed it runs almost silently, much quieter than similar hard drives I have owned in the past. The Maxtor 1 TB is one of the best looking external hard drives available and is designed very well.

Ease of Installation

The Maxtor comes with an install disk but does not require it, driver files are also contained on the hard drive itself and the simple ‘plug and play’ system that this allows means that files can be easily stored and accessed from any laptop or computer you plug it into. The Maxtor 1 TB is easy to install and should take no longer than ten seconds.

Ease of Use

The Maxtor is very easy to use, simply plug it into the USB port and away you go. It is recognised as a regular mass storage drive and has no special interface, making it very easy for those who are not technophiles. You can simply drag and drop or copy and paste files into it, the Maxtor is truly the definition of easy to use.

Instruction Manual

My Maxtor 1 TB came with no instruction manual per se, it came with a thick booklet containing warranty information in a dozen languages and a single sheet of A4 describing the layout of the Hard Drive and simple troubleshooting problems. These are all the instructions you need as it is rather clear what to do, the Maxtor is clearly meant to store your files with minimum fuss. The lack of huge instruction manual is no bad thing, rather, it is a positive thing, and there is no point in providing elaborate instructions for a simple ‘plug and play’ style product.

Speed

Speed is one of the most important features in an external hard drive, and luckily the Maxtor does not disappoint. In my experience a 700mb video file will be transferred either from or to the hard drive in less than ten seconds. In terms of accessing data the Maxtor is just as impressive, able to load a 700mb video file immediately with no lag whatsoever, video files never stutter or skip. Upon plugging it into the USB port however it can take almost 30 seconds to be recognised by my laptop (this is also the case on another laptop and a desktop computer), sadly letting down the otherwise astonishing speed that this external hard drive has.

Value for Money

At the time of writing, you will be pushed to find a 1 terabyte external hard drive that looks so good and works so well at a lower price than the Maxtor. The huge storage capacity means it will be hard to fill and I have never experienced any faults and as such this will represent great value for money.

Overall

Almost the perfect external hard drive, incredibly easy to install and use, a huge amount of memory and aesthetically amazing. When plugged into the USB port it takes a small while to be recognised, but following this all files no matter how large are loaded up instantly. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs a large amount of storage space at a good price.
