I bought one of these recently to put all my familly Data , Photo's Video's etc on, thought great if my PC needs re-formatting i can have peace of mind that all my treasured memories are safe. That was until a week ago "Maxtor" has now changed its name to "Seagate" well one minute the external harddrive was ok next the green light was flashing i have bene told its an electrical fault. Here's my problem i have i took it back to argos and they said they would be happy to replace or re-fund the product onto a voucher as its still under guarentee but they would not and cannot do anything about the lost data inside. I asked do the company offer recovering your data? as its there faulty equipment that has broke the store said no all they would do is wipe it clean, so all my treasured memories would be lost forever. Why are these companies made to offer a very lowcost Data recovery service or better made to replace the drive with your memories back on the replacement drive, its there faulty equipment ! my advice is to think hard about splashing out alot of money on these External hard drives until a change of law or customer service improves, where they will recover your lost data. There is a way i have took my hard drive to the local PC shop they are going to recover the Data and put it back on my REPLACEMENT from Argos ( but all this is costing me more money the company will not refund me for), even if the hard drive is still under guarentee so beware i contacted Maxtor customers sevices and they have not even bothered replying so there you go
Advantages: Maximizes the amount of data vs the cost of the product Disadvantages: heat issues, cord connectivity, and small installation problems.
...but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer speed issues, or just annoyance from when the usb gets knocked out. That being said, if you can get past the downside of have an external I would recommend this product to anyone not using a Mac. The only reason I do not recommend this to Mac owners ...

...was really hot but the maxtor was just warm.
Luckily I did not go for the more expensive brother (onetouch 4) for further details read CNET reviews
I think as it is an external drive it should NOT be on constantly, I generally eject the hardware from th pc and it simply turns itself off (completely)<= I like this function.
Comes with 3 years warranty. Specs: 500gb, 7200rpm, 16MB/500GB cache buffer
Just go for it...

Advantages: Fast when copy 4 - 5 GB of data at a time Disadvantages: Heating and crashes
I bought this hard drive couple of weeks back to replace my 80 GB hard drive. It is alot cheaper than other brands and gives a lot of extra space to copy your data. This product is amazingly fast when you copy small chunks of data (about 4 to 5 gb). It is very fast. But when you copy huge data, it heats up and crashes. I was copying over 70 GB of data from my old hard drive and I was unable to do it. I failed several time but when i did it in small ...
