The Personal Storage line of external hard drives comes from Maxtor, who were acquired by Seagate last year. As a subsidiary of Seagate, Maxtor is currently the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. What does this mean to the consumer? It means that you're getting a high-quality product supported by a top world leader in computer storage. The Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 is a perfect example of why the Maxtor product line is so popular. Storage with the Maxtor is as simple as it can get - you will be copying files and folders to this drive within minutes of getting it out of the box. The hard drive came pre-formatted in the NTFS file system (which is more secure, efficient and generally higher performing than its predecessor, FAT) which means you can get going straight away. Not all hard drives come preformatted and ready to go, which otherwise can take a few hours get going if it wasn't already preformatted. The drive connects by a single USB 2.0 cable (which is included, again, not all hard drives come with the cable). USB 2.0 provides speeds of up to 480 Mbit/s which enables a fast file transfer when copying files to the hard disk. However, it is also compatible, like all USB 2.0 products, with USB's predecessor, USB 1 or 1.1, it will simply operate at a lower speed (which is still not too slow). The disk itself spins at 7200rpm, which is the fastest hard drive speed available, and works along side USB 2 to enable the fast file transfer. No drivers are required (except for Windows 98), and I have used the disk on both Microsoft and Linux platforms. For the technical people out there, you can even boot from the external hard disk, should you wish to. 500GB is by far plenty of storage, which will let you store, for example, around 65 hours of high-definition TV recording, 120,000 songs, and millions of photos (of course these figures are rough estimates, and will depend on the exact file formats and quality of the files). The Maxtor came nicely packed, comes with a small stand so that it can sit vertically (space saving) and sits smartly on anybody's desk. A small green LED flashes when there is hard disk activity, and the drive is powered by a standard plug. To conclude, the Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 is everything you need as far as personal storage goes - simplicity, great value for money and ease of use. I paid £65 for my Maxtor hard disk at a high-street electronics store in the UK, which, if you divide by 500, means you're paying only 13p per gigabyte of storage. Congratulations Maxtor on such a great product.
Advantages: Fast and reliable Disadvantages: Automatic spin-down can be annoying
...market. Firstly, being made by Maxtor you would be expecting something special. And I can happily say that it does outclass many of the other drives out there. It is a 7200rpm drive, and so file transfers are as quick as on an internal hard disk. While I'm on the topic of performance, there is one little issue. The drive will power itself down after a period of inactivity, which is great if you like to save energy, and probably good for the lifespan ... ...you'll need to wait for it to spin back up to speed again before it can be used. This can take from about 4-6 seconds, and can be slightly irritating when it keeps happening. Placing the operating system's pagefile on the disk has resolved this issue for me, as the pagefile is accessed frequently.
The actual look of the device is quite nice, considering that it isn't something you stare at. It's large, but not to a monsterous degree, and can be ...

Advantages: When working - Fast, convenient, massive capacity. Disadvantages: Not reliable
Started off very well.
Plug and play as promised, via USB. Very easy to use, quick access : very simple to create folders and upload all those things you want to backup (you do keep backups, don't you?!). So on went all my MP3s, pictures, software, in case of a disk crash on my PC
No problems for the first 8 months.
Then it stopped working. Looked like it just wouldn't power up (green light only faintly flickered). Try to take back to shop under ... ...NO data transfer. The word 'limited' is the key here.
Overall very dissatisfied. A so-called high quality product which has proved to be very shoddy with no after-sales backup. Oh, and it came with a free Trojan virus.
Having read many other reviews for the same product, the above I have described is not uncommon.
I wouldn't buy another one. ...

I bought this product a month ago and have found no problems so far. it came well packaged in its box and was extremely easy to set up. all i did was:
1, unpackaged it, 2, pluged the included usb cable into my laptop and to the unit,
3, plugged the power cable into the wall and to the unit,
4, it came up onto my computer
5, i copied my itunes, videos, masses of corsework, very quickley and easily.

Another point that i must add: dont set your torrent/p2p downloads to download to this, the reason is that when you leave your computer downloading over night to the disk the fan and the hdd become very noticable especially if you ...

Quick review of Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 500 GB
Take a look at the Seagate forums for the dozens of people with problems with these drives. They tend to need to be powered up separately to the computer on every reboot or the drive is not recognised and wishes to be reformatted. Garbage .. avoid it and all the Maxtor Basics line up.
Seagate will ignore complaints about it. ...
