...I have just bought two of these great drives. Having over 20 years of experience with PCs at all levels. I can say that Seagate once ruled the hill, but that was then. For the past 5 years I have been using and today I insist on, Maxtor drives. I own (and still use) 9 drives in my machine (30gigs short of 2 terra's) - they are Maxtor: 40, 80, 160 (ide), 300, 300, 320, 320 (sata). I also have two Western Dig's 200 and 250 (ide) - they're ok I guess... I love my Maxtor drives though (touch wood) I have never had a problem... ever... okay there was one time I drank too much at a LAN party and formatted the wrong drive, and then there were a lot of times I had a problems with the best virus (or handcuff) in the world (i.e. Windows). Advice: I'm a pathetic romantic when it comes to keeping my drives cool (way below 40deg.C) and I think...

Advantages: fast Disadvantages: very unreliable - terminal illness - genetic
...Maxtor - one of the most popular makes of mid range hard drives, available from most stores including PC World. What they fail to tell you is that Maxtor hard drives, although fast are very unreliable. In fact, Maxtor hard disk drives have an inherant head problem - no we're not talking spots - they have a tendancy to crash - locking the head to the "motor" thus disabling the drive. It will cease to be regonised by your computer and even the much rated Norton Disk Doctor will not be able to rescue it. The only option - start again or fork out £300 to ge tthe date retreived. OUCH! Better go with a seagate, Western Digital or Quantum next time!...

Advantages: Very fast, reliable and quiet... and Cheap! Disadvantages: Absolutely nothing!
...that would give me years of happy use with no maintenance whatsoever, and so far all of my Maxtor disks have been this way.
So I settled on the DiamondMax 10 in the 250GB size. It has a whopping 16MB (!!) cache, and a good 7200RPM spin speed. I do not have native Serial ATA on my motherboard, so I opted for the PATA version. I have never had a problem with the performance of PATA drives, so see no real reason to upgrade.
When I got the drive it was already set to the correct jumper settings, making installation a doddle. I had made a Ghost image of the 80GB drives and transferred it to my laptop, so I just used the USB case from my 10GB drive to restore the image to the new drive.
It worked first time, and within 20 minutes of opening the box I was going about my business as usual. The speed bump was most noticeable gain from the upgrade...

The Personal Storage line of external hard drives comes from Maxtor, who were acquired by Seagate last year. As a subsidiary of Seagate, Maxtor is currently the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. What does this mean to the consumer? It... more
Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer... more
Well what can i say. I chose maxtor because i thought it was a good named brand and would be reliable. Plus the fact they have been taken over by seagate who have been in the hard drive business forever. With these two factors you would think this would... more
