The new external hard drive from Maxtor is great for a number of reasons.
1. Space
The new maxtor one-touch can be bought with between 200 and 300 gb of space. Even a 200 gb drive will hold hours of music and video, and will hold a large amount of digital photos along with any programs you wish to install on the drive.
2. Transfer Speed
With the possibility of a firewire connection, the transferring of files can be very quick. For example I transferred 30gb of music in about 30 mins through firewire where as USB could take up to 1 1/2 hours!
3. Read Speed (7200 rpm)
In terms of running programs and games directly from the maxtor, the read speed from this drive is superb. Programs will load almost instantly and most actions will be completed immediately. Loading times for games are cut significantly in comparison to standard drives placed in computers.
4. Plug and play
As with most peripherals nowadays for the PC the Maxtor one-touch supports plug and play. So you will be ready to go straight away. No installation needed.
5. One-touch button
Maxtor have introduced a new component on their hard-drives known as the one-touch button. Pressing this cause the drive to perform an action automatically. Using the easy-to-follow instructions the user may setup this button to perform any action they require. However, Maxtor personally recommend that you set the button as a computer back-up so that when pressed the drive will restore your computer to the setting you had before. Again the insruction manual will show you how to do this.
One noticeable problem with this drive is the weight of the drive and size of both the connection cable and the power lead. This can make slightly more difficult to carry around. But only slightly.
Another problem is the technical support you will receive. The instruction manual is probably the only place where you will find anything useful as the tech support hotline is pretty much useless. It is difficult to ever get through and when you do it ispossible that the staff will struggle to assist with your problem.
Overall
At the price this drive retails for I don't believe you can go wrong. Most other manufacturers will not be able to match both size of drive and price of drive. It has the ability to connect both USB and Firewire, making it easy to use for both Desktops and Notebooks/Laptops. Although the support is not ideal, the manual should provide you with enough help to keep the drive running well. All in all a fantastic product and a must have for music, film or game loving PC users.

The drive is amazingly quiet - a feint clicking sound is heard when it spins up and spins down, but beyond that, all that is perceptible is a feint low woozing sound, which seems to be created by vibrations going through to my desk. Even this can be almost eliminated by putting something soft like a duster between the drive and the desk.
At just under £200 for 200Gb of storage, it is significantly more expensive than standard desktop 200Gbharddrives, but for what it is it is very good value - the alternative would be to buy a standard harddrive and a casing to put it in, but the casings are surprisingly expensive and it does not save you a lot of money. Internal laptop drives do not go this big yet.

Maxtor is a big Hard Drive manufacturer and I have used them before even buying drives to put into two of my own PCs and both times the drives have worked fine, knowing this I thought they would make good external drives...
