Advantages: USB 2.0 and Firewire Disadvantages: Not the lightest thing around 1.5kg
First of all this HDD id like to say this is a very good HDD but it not to good if your planning to carry it around it ways around 1.5kg and then there's the power cable, the drive is big too 13.6 cm x 6.5 cm x 21.7 cm, so not very portable.
The HDD capacity is 300GB but actually is slightly less around 285GB.
The HDD use USB2 and Firewire (6 pin) using the USB cable data transfer is very fast about 450mbs with a good USB card and the same goes for the Firewire with speeds ranging from 390 to 400mb. The average seek time is around 9ms. The internal buffer size is 16mb with really makes this HDD very fast at reading and writhing. It has a standard spindle speed of 7200rpm.
The installation is extremely simple just plug and play and it does jut that well with XP it does. This is great value for money as long as you intend to leave it ...
Advantages: one button, reliability, lot of software Disadvantages: my system wants to boot from it
Device is solid and reliable, case well protects the hard drive (dropped it once and nothing happens, just a scuff mark). On the front panel you will find one button, it's being used for backup of the data.
With the hard drive you will get various software, the most important will be Retrospect Express HD, which backups and restores the data. Through the applications there is also a possiblity to protect the drive by setting a password, manage efficiency or change the OneTouch button function. This hard drive is perfect for storing large amount of videos and music, because it ts external it is very easy to share your files with friends.
One small thing that I didn't like is that I have to turn it off after starting a computer, otherwise computer will try to boot the system from it. I think it is something with my comp, as I tried it ...
Advantages: Tough, easy to use, fast to back-up Disadvantages: Setting up the software preferences can take a little while
There are a lot of external hard drives out there and choosing the right one can be confusing. The MaxtorOneTouchIII in my opinion has two advantages over many others. Firstly, and the reason for buying one myself, was its durability. We all have the occasional accident so its good to know that when we accidentally drop it on the hard pavement as we're getting into the car that we haven't just destroyed our equipment and more importantly all our hard work stored on its massive 500GB drive.
Secondly, its OneTouch software makes it extremely easy to back up your files fast and eficiently. You can specify certain folders to back up and when you hit the button on the front it will search for any files in those folders that are not present on the drive and back them up for you automatically. Theres really no excuse not to back things up ...
