The Maxtor 3100 is a super, efficient and simple way to back up all your important data. It comes supplied with USB lead and an external power supply. Simply plug into the mains, plug the USB lead into a spare USB port on your PC or laptop and the drive is automatically detected and appears in 'My Computer'. There is no manual or CD supplied, but it is so simple you do not need one. The drive can be formatted to FAT32 or NTFS. The 200GB storage is enough to store all your MP3 music collection or several DVD films. This unit is totally portable and is an ideal way to transport files between office and home. It also has a good robust case. The drive runs at an excellent speed of 7200rpm. The only thing I find is, that the unit is not designed to stand on its side, unlike most other external drives. Therefore, the footprint of the unit is somewhat larger than my last one and takes up a little more space on my crowded desk. I have the drive partitioned into two, so that my son can use his half to store his music files on, he takes it out with his laptop so he has all his music with him, without taking up space on the laptop's hard drive. I use my half of the the drive for data backup (better and quicker than burning it to CD). At around £85, at the time of purchase ( Oct 2005), I think this was very good value for the amount of storage available.

I bought this last week at Tesco for under £40 so thought 160Gb forvthat price couldn't be bad. we just wanted to back up our photos and music and free a bit of space on our computer.

Maxtor is a big Hard Drive manufacturer and I have used them before even buying drives to put into two of my own PCs and both times the drives have worked fine, knowing this I thought they would make good external drives...
