I have had quite a few mascaras, I tend to buy the brand names because I like to think that they will work properly and you see advertisements for them everywhere. The bristles on the brush of my previous mascara had started falling off, which wasn't very good and I hadn't had it for that long, but for this reason I thought that I'd better get a new one. I bought the Maybelline Define-A-Lash from Boots as it was on offer so I thought I was getting a pretty good deal. It was brand new in the shops and it appealed to me because of the things it said it would do, the fact that it was Maybelline, and it especially stood out because it is bright green! It was exactly what I was looking for and I thought that it was really unique because it has a built in "clump remover" which I'll tell you more about later.
The founder of the Maybelline brand was named T.L. Williams
and he invented the first ever mascara in Chicago in 1913! Apparently his sister, Maybel had a boyfriend who was in love with another woman and she desperately wanted to win him back so T.L. Williams blended Vaseline and coal dust to create a lash darkener, though it was probably a whole lot different to what we call mascara nowadays. His plan worked and his sister married her boyfriend, and so T.L. Williams named the brand after his sister Maybel and used part of the word vaseline to create Maybelline! In 1967 he sold it and it was sold again until eventually it ended up in New York and was owned by (and still is owned by) L'Oréal. L'Oréal is the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty companies and the founder's daughter, Liliane Bettencourt, is now one of the richest people on the planet.
Define-A-Lash is advertised on the television, in magazines, on billboards and on the internet but I think that it is false advertising because it says that the model is wearing lash inserts (in miniscule writing). It shouldn't be allowed for companies to advertise mascara when the reason that the model has nice eyelashes is that she is wearing false ones!
The packaging for Define-A-Lash is fairly simple but it has extra cardboard and plastic, which isn't really needed. On the front of the packaging it says the name and brand name and has the colour of the mascara indicated on the bottom left-hand corner, in this case, black. You can see the actual mascara through the clear plastic, and next to that it tells you that the product will give you, "Sensually long lashes, perfect definition and zero clumps." On the back it tells you even more about it, and it reads, "Our advanced brush wiping system deposits the optimal amount of product on the brush, without excess. Ergonomic Shaped-to-the-Lash Brush with elastic bristles is shaped to the lash curve to better capture and evenly coat each and every lash from base to tip. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers." Then below that there is an unending list of ingredients that I am not going to bother wasting my time typing out!
As I mentioned before, the colour of the mascara tube is bright green, and it is certainly eye-catching and instantly recognisable and I like it, I think it looks really unique. The tube is recyclable. It is simply a cylinder in shape, with white writing on and all you need to do is twist the top to take out the brush, and then you can use it.
The built in clump remover is basically something inside the mascara tube that compresses the brush to get rid of any clumps (there is a picture at the bottom to help you understand what it looks like). I have never seen any mascaras with a clump remover and I think that it is an excellent idea, because it is really simple but it works fantastically. Maybelline has said that if there are no clumps on the brush, there should be no clumps on the lashes and it is absolutely true. I have never had any clumps from Define-A-Lash which is great!
The ergonomic brush is designed for ease of use and it bends so that it can reach all of the eyelashes, which again is true. The bristles are very thin so that they separate the eyelashes and none of them have fell off like they did with my previous one! The mascara is really easy to apply and afterwards my eyelashes do not feel sticky or gloopy, instead they feel separated and long. Overall I think that the design of the Define-A-Lash mascara is different to what the other mascaras are like and unlike with other mascaras, they can prove their statements because of the brush and clump remover.
I love this mascara, it makes my eyelashes really long and it really does separate them really well, and I haven't had any problems with clumps at all. It gives really long lashes but don't expect to look like the woman in the advert - unless your wearing false eyelashes. It makes your eyelashes stand out and if you apply more than one coat they will look even fuller, but to get the desired look one coat is usually more than enough. It does not irritate your eyes in any way and it doesn't have a nasty smell, the quality of Define-A-Lash is excellent. It stays on all day long, and as you would expect at the end of the day your lashes look just as great as they did when you first put it on. This mascara is not waterproof so I wouldn't recommend it to people who cry a lot, however they do have a waterproof version! To remove it, all I do is use a baby wipe and it does the job perfectly but you may also use soap and water, or another type of make-up remover.
They make Define-A-Lash in three colours; Very Black, Soft Black, and Brownish Black. I opted fro one of the black versions - not too sure which one though! In Superdrug they are selling it for £7.49 and when I bought mine from Boots it was £5.49 but I'm not sure if this offer is still on.
I think that buying this mascara was money well spent, and I must say that all of the things that Maybelline have said that it does have turned out to be true. The results are amazing and I would definitely recommend it to people who want great lashes. Mascara is my favourite make-up and I couldn't have wanted anything more from it. Define-A-Lash is a mascara that says what it does on the packaging, and it was worth every penny.
