In a seemingly endless quest for the perfect Mascara I decided to try out Maybelline Define A Lash Mascara, I had always been a devotee of Lash Discovery with it's natural look thanks to the mini brush but with it out of production and Lash Stylist proving to be a disaster my search took me on to Define A lash.
Maybelline Define A Lash mascara comes in a vivid green tube and has a uniquely designed applicator brush, made of flexible rubber rather than traditional bristles, it also has a anti-clump feature built in within the tube aimed at removing any excess mascara before you apply it to your lashes, it is available in 2 tones of Brown and Black and has a special lightweight formula to give the lashes a look of definition and length.
When I first used the Define A lash I was a bit concerned about the size of the applicator, compared to my usual Lash Discovery the brush seemed huge and I was worried that I would end up with thick clumpy eyelashes yet I was pleasantly surprised to see that the brush swept through the lashes easily and equally applied a layer of the mascara, giving my lashes a little extra length while not adding to much body. Now I'm a fan of the natural look and usually leave application at one layer however you can use the mascara for several layers building up a bit of extra volume for a more dramatic effect, you need to do this quite quickly rather than allowing the mascara to dry between applications otherwise you can end up with lashes sticking together which isn't all that attractive and is the opposite of what the product is designed for.
My Define A Lash isn't waterproof, although it is available in a waterproof option, but it has managed to stand up to minor rain storms without turning me into a panda and it is easy to remove with eye make up remover or some gentle soap and water. It is important to remove it at the end of the day or before redoing your make up for a night out otherwise, just as with applying multiple layers, you'll end up with clumps of stuck together lashes. While the product isn't quite as delicate as Lash Discovery it's the closest I've found to giving me the perfect natural look that I love, it is really easy to apply even with the larger applicator and the flexibility provided by the brush is great, I've yet to poke myself in the eye unlike when I use Lash Stylist with it's solid comb applicator.
One thing I have noticed about the product though is that it has a unusual, slightly chemical smell which I've never experienced before in a mascara, I don't know if it's the material used in the applicator or an ingredient in the mascara itself but it's quite strange, although not potent or overpowering and certainly doesn't put me off of using it. My only other complaint is in regards to the price, at £7.99 for a tube it is quite pricey and while I can make a tube last quite a while down to the small amount I use, a person who likes a lot of layers may find themselves getting through a tube quickly and having to fork out an awful lot of money every year.
Overall I can certainly recommend the product, it's easy to apply and looks great, giving a nice amount of length while still remaining natural looking.
