Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation

Introduction and reason for purchase

I rarely wear make up as I simply am not a huge fan but one thing I do use on a regular basis is concealer as I have slightly uneven skin tone particularly on my chin due to scarring from teenage acne. I can be quite self conscious about this despite it not being very noticeable to other people, but even so I like to have some kind of concealer in the house at all times to cover up when needed.

I've been a fan of just simple concealer sticks for many years but having received a sample of Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse a few years ago I was quite impressed..even more so when I realised it was actually a foundation, something which I've never really bothered about before.

Having gone out and purchased the full size product my review will now focus on my experience of using Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse in 'Ivory' shade..

Price, packaging & availability

The mousse comes presented in a compact size jar which holds 18ml. This may not sound like much but as such a small amount is needed per application it lasts a *long* time! The packaging is identical for all the shades with just a hint of colour change to the lid itself to depict the different shades, and as the one I'm reviewing is Ivory it is a light beige lid (not ivory!) with the lids morphing into deeper shades for the appropriate darkening of the colours of the mousse's.

The mousse itself is very easy to access as there is a screw top lid which is large and bulky, though not cumbersome, and is easy enough to grab hold of to remove. The rest of the packaging is made up of a thick and sturdy glass which is completely transparent and the mousse itself is clearly visible from the base upwards. The appearance is basic and has a typical 'cosmetics' look and doesn't particularly stand out from any other similar products on the shelves apart from the fact it's in a glass jar and not a tube like lots of other foundations.

Price wise this cost me £6.99 from Superdrug which to me seemed a lot of money at first for a product I don't normally use but as I am now on my 3rd pot in just a little under 5 years I now think it's extremely economical.

Maybelline Matte Mousse can be purchased from most retailers that sell cosmetics and alternatively it can be found online with prices ranging from £6 upwards depending on where you shop.

My experience of using this

On opening the lid we are met with a creamy mousse in a pale colour, which is more light beige in my opinion than ivory, though this colour seems to suit my skin tone the most so it's the obvious choice for me. The mousse has a whipped texture about it and the consistency is as expected very light to touch. There isn't a particular scent that accompanies this, just a generic light cream scent that is barely noticeable but doesn't smell too much like cosmetics if that makes sense.

On dipping my forefinger into the pot and scooping out a tiny amount onto my finger tip I find the mousse glides over my skin with ease. The mousse literally disappears over my skin and feels actually very soft and moisturising which helps with the blending I find.

The mousse feels so light on my finger tips and equally just as much on my face as it blends in with my skin effortlessly and covers any imperfections flawlessly without looking obvious.

Results and recommendations

Whilst I have nothing but praise for the actual product and it's ease of application I do find it's longevity rather limited as it does tend to wear off quite quickly. This isn't too much of a problem for myself as I only use sparingly mainly on my chin, but can see how annoying it would be if worn all over the face. I also have slight dry patches which mainly occur on my cheeks and forehead though sometimes can appear on my chin. When I've used this mousse after a while it seems to dry the patches making them stand out more which isn't ideal and a friend who uses this also commented that she finds the same thing happens to her.

Apart from those two slight negatives though I have nothing but praise for this product as having tried several foundations in the past (mainly fluid versions) I've found them to offer little in the way of natural coverage. This mousse is completely different from anything else I've ever tried as once I found the correct match colour wise I've never looked back since. I briefly had a few dalliances with Avon's own version when it was launched a few years ago and found it to be poor quality in comparison with this one by Maybelline which is in my opinion far superior.

One small pot lasts me almost a full year and this is with using almost consecutively throughout the week day in day out. Although as mentioned I do only use sparingly on my chin even if I used all over my face I can see that a pot would still last well over 6 months making it an excellent purchase. Though there is a Maybelline concealer mousse available I personally found it too heavy for my skin so have stuck to the foundation version which covers evenly, doesn't cause and skin reactions and is easily removable (I just use baby lotion which suffices). I would suggest though testing this out on your hand first before buying as I have bought 'nude' shades in the past for other brands which suffice but find that nude from Maybelline is far too dark for my complexion.

I've been using this now for almost 5 years and it's my main (and more or less only) make up staple and I wouldn't be without it.

Maybelline matte mousse is deserving of 4 out of 5 stars - but one deducted for the fact it doesn't stay put very long, but other than that it's an excellent product and one that I will continue to use in the future.

An excellent product that gives even coverage at an affordable price - easy to apply and equally to remove, looks natural and covers perfectly with no obvious flaws so as a non make up wearer it gets the thumbs up from me.
