I wear a lot of nail varnish and usually have a colour of some sort on my nails. Maybelline is a brand which I find to be generally very good for nail varnish and I have quite a few of their quick drying "Express Finish" nail varnishes. About 6 months ago or so I ended up picking up this Forever Strong nail varnish with some of the Express Finish bottles as I wasn't really paying attention. I wasn't actually really intending to try the Forever Strong but I am glad I ended up with it!
I have the colour Golden Brown which is a lovely metallic pale pinkish brown. I think it actually looks quite similar to the new Chanel "Delight" nail varnish shade so this could be worth a try if you want a cheap dupe of that! My mum also has a bottle of the same shade, so this one obviously appeals to women across the ages as I am 25 and my mum is 60. It is a classy colour which is definitely safe for work in my opinion.
The colour range in Maybelline Forever Strong unfortunately does seem quite limited. Whenever I see them in Boots or Superdrug there only ever seem to be about six or seven colours, and they are all quite classic, tame colours on the pinky or bronzey end of the spectrum. There seems to be no chance of getting this in bolder or vivid colours such as teal or aquamarine shades, which I would like.
The nail varnish comes in a sturdy glass bottle containing 10 ml. It is wide and thin in shape, not really cylindral like a lot of nail varnishes. The cap is quite long and very easy to hold in your hand while applying the nail varnish.
One of the best things about the Maybelline nail varnishes in my opinion is that they are so easy to apply and always end up looking really smooth and neat on my nails. I never get any streakiness, unevenness, any clumps or nail varnish on the skin around my nails when I use them, and that applies to both this Forever Strong and the Express Finish. The brush is quite broad, so you can get good coverage of most of the nail in one stroke. I tend to do one stroke down the middle and then a couple more strokes closer to each side to ensure the whole nail is nicely covered. The nail varnish is not too runny so it doesn't drip and is easy to control.
I can get a fair level of opacity from just one coat, but if you want a richer and fuller colour it is worth doing a second coat, which I normally do. I find that two shades achieve a colour very true to the colour shown through the bottle.
It is not as quick drying as the Express Finish, but still dries fast compared to a lot of other nail varnishes. I would say it is touch dry in two to three minutes. I usually leave it longer just to be on the safe side but there is no question of sitting around for an hour afraid to touch anything!
This particular Maybelline range is named Forever Strong for two reasons. Firstly it has calcium and iron which is intended to strengthen the nails and secondly it is supposed to be long lasting and remain in good condition and chip free on the nails for up to seven days. Both of these aspects really appealed to me.
I'm not sure that I really give this nail varnish the chance to strengthen my nails as I use a Sally Hansen clear nail strengthener underneath as a base coat. However, on the few occasions when I have used this nail varnish straight onto the nail without a base, I did not get any staining and it did not seem to damage my nails in any way. I wouldn't say I noticed any improvement or strength, but really all I ask and hope for from a coloured nail varnish is that it does not weaken and ruin my nails!
As for lasting seven days, it is quite a big claim but I do actually find it lives up to it. Some nail varnishes chip on my fingers after two or three days but I find Maybelline ones in general last better. I can definitely get a week out of this with no chips, especially if I use a clear top coat to protect it. It has lasted even longer than a week on my toes before.
At less than a fiver I think these Forever Strong nail varnishes are good value. They will last for ages as you don't have to keep touching up your nails every few days, you only need two coats for a perfect finish and I don't waste any by making a mess and having to take it off and start again.
I really love this range and the Maybelline nail varnishes in general as they make it so easy to achieve nails which look well manicured and groomed.
